Pens -- JAN 2020

Morning from Houston; from what I can glean from the postgame coverage, Guins had a good 1st period.......and then got circles skated around them the 2nd and 3rd. But hey, I'd rather be the Guins this morning than the Knights; nothing more devastating than to outplay the opposition and have a loss to show for it.

Meanwhile, one little tidbit I heard this morning in the shower on NHLN Radio; Pierre McGuire was talking about the WJ, and brought up the last time the Russians won in 2011. Apparently, that team's top line was Kuznetsov between Tarasenko and Panarin......like them or not, that's a pretty decent unit.
Watched the highlights just now...Jarry looked pretty good most part, seems they were trying to shoot through traffic and succeeded. MAF looks to be as weak as he ever has down low, not that I care at this point really. That was a well timed wicked backhander from Geno however...

Read a Josh Yohe piece in The Athletic indicating that Fleury has evidently had trouble getting over the death of his Dad.....I'm wondering if playing the Pens in some way goosed his emotions, in that he somehow identifies his Dad with his days in Pittsburgh. Maybe that was part of his trouble last night.

As for that Geno backhander, that sonovabitch had some friggin' serious mustard on it.

There is this Local watering Hole close to the Denver U campus. I saw Montgomery in there a couple of times Hitten it hard. Rumour has it he was fired from the Stars for hitten the booze.

While Sid evidently has accompanied the team on this road trip, PHN reports he did not skate with the team.....nor by himself.....yesterday. Nor has he as yet taken any contact at all.

However, this day-off was evidently pre-planned; which means it seems pretty clear he's following a very specific rehabilitation plan, and nothing should therefore be assumed with regard to timing of his eventual return. Accordiing to the piece.....and reading between the lines......Sid may indeed have made the trip, more than anything else, as a means simply to connect with his buddy MacKinnon in Denver.

I myself think there's a very strong likelihood he's not even thinking about returning to action until after the ASG. Maybe they get lucky that Tricky Nicky and/or Schultzie are back in the lineup sooner.

And one more thing......tbis one from DK.....it appears Kahun may indeed stick with Geno and Rusty on the top line for now. Not sure if this signals the banging of the final nail in Yuk's coffin......

Seeing an awful lot of outlets detailing possible trade action on Yuk...this of course could mean nothing or foretell the future...

I've frankly been surprised at the comparatively positive media comments regarding a possible Galchenyuk acquisition by someone/anyone.

Once you properly factor out the idiot "Kessel may not be having the greatest year, but Galchenyuk sure isn't doing anything for Pittsburgh". assessments....which I actually heard the other day from Gord Stellick, who oughta know better.....I've seen him associated at one time or another with pretty much everyone who needs scoring (though Buffalo mostly).

Who knows.....seems like the only places I've haven't heard him going is Montreal and Arizona (though the Habs could probably use him). But in return for the proverbial used puck bag (or a maybe couple jocks), he'll be a virtually risk-free acquistion by the deadline.

Oh so am I (surprised)...and yes if the return is simply those puck bags or jocks figuratively speaking, I'm good with it in order to provide a bit of room for the injured bodies and hopefully an acquisition to mitigate the Jake loss somewhat...Yuk looks a bit better with the extra ice time to my eyes compared to start of year, but still not close enough to what I would expect with the contract number...

Any word out there on who is in the hemp hut tonight? I'll assume with the recent for most part decent performances out of 30 Sully will want to get him in there for one of these 3 roadies to at least simply, keep him engaged...not sure whether I'd lean toward the Av's or Zona. These are two IMO vastly different teams that are having pretty good seasons...hmmm....

PHN saying it's TJ tonight......Avs are starting someone named Pavel Francouz, who's supposedly 11-4-1 this year.

Grubauer gave up 4 goals on 28 shots the other night versus the NYR (when the Russian kid Shesterkin beat him at MSG). Maybe Bednar decided he didn't deserve the start tonight......which still surprises me, since they don't play again until Tuesday

Several interesting tidbits from today's ESPN Power Rankings (FWIW, Pens position is unchanged at #5)......
  • Avs are said to be the only team in the League with no wins after trailing entering the 3rd period (0-10-1)
  • Yotes have six (6) players with double figures in GF.....and none of them are among their top 4 highest paid forwards (Phat, Stefan , Schmaltz, or Hall)
  • In NJD at NYI on Tuesday, goalie Thomas Greiss was called for the only penalty in the game; only the second time that's ever happened
  • Carter Hart has a .947 save % at home, and .850 on the road
  • Dead Wings are 3-0-0 versus Montreal, and 8-30-3 against the rest of the League

Don't know if Kingerski was just making an assumption about Jarry tonighth, or he got double-crossed......either way, let's hope for a good game from #30.

In looking at their roster, the Avs have THREE defensemen 6-4 225 or bigger......jeez. Their forwards aren't exceptionally big as a full unit, but they've still got two monsters there (Nichuskin at 6-4 210 and Rantanen at 6-4 215)

This is definitely one we are gonna have to steal....see you 30? I'm lookin at you fella....and you Geno? You need to ignore the 'I need to take a penalty' thoughts in your mind....

Gawd dammit...... and worse, in the last 90 seconds of the period.

Yep...I know....and that bounce I see how it happens, it is simply unlucky, was he ready, not excusing it just the same...he knows he has to hold it together in 3 all told...ugh.

Oh, that friggin puck took an almost football-like bounce......not sure the last time I saw one like that, no matter who was/is in the cage.

Important goal......not just to tie the score, but it indicates to me this Francouz kid may be playing nervous. The more rubber on him this period the better {in my estimation).

A point here would be great...however are you like I thinking this one is for the taking???

I do....they're skating very well; and when the wheels are turning, the game is there for the taking. Need some chances, though.....like for example, it would have been nice to see Yuk actually hit the goal on that last close-in shot.

Big shot by Geno......maybe his biggest of the season thus far IF the lead stands.

Unfortunately, the team with MacKinnon would seem to have the advantage in pretty much every 3 on 3 there is......

Absolutely gigantic gut-check coming off the late GA......I think one of their 2 or 3 best wins off the season.

And that is just it....How do they do it? I'm highly impressed....damn , well alright!!!!!

They just don't quit......you add great skating......and almost equally good goaltending......and it proves you can win games in this League, even when you're shorthanded.

I guess......

Not a lot of games on tonight
...and I have to tell ya CM it's a pretty big deal when the National SN desk leads off with two American teams on the highlights if a Canadian team is playing? That has never happened to my recollection unless Sid scored 3 or similar....I prefer to lay low all the same....but...it's beautiful. Let's get 6 points and strut home....

Was watching the Avs post game, and they thought the loss was pretty much solely due to lousy goaltending. And the reality IS the Pens scored two of their four through the kid's 5 hole.....and that's obviously not good in a close game. But at least Bednar recognized his team scored a lucky one as well, so he wasn't quite as harsh as the media about the goaltending (without absolving the kid of HIS share of the blame).

Meanwhile, I think most agree McJesus is considered THE best in the business pretty much by acclaim.......and who am I to argue with that. But I'm just not sure MacKinnon can't do most everything he can, and at pretty damn comparable speed. If I were starting a team from scratch, not sure I wouldn't be every bit as glad to start with NM.

That kid is a friggin' machine.....

Lots have things have lined up for this absurdly shorthanded team the last month......tonight just wasn't one those times. Hope they can rediscover some energy before they play Vegas on Tuesday; sure wish they had TWO days off before that game. I think I'll be reasonably content with 3 points on this trip.....and downright elated with 4 points.

Well, Guins get the 4 points I was praying for in only 2 games......and now you get the shot at the full 6 tomorrow night in PHX.

Too bad it's not a back-to-backer; while I suspect the Pens left a fair amount at Pepsi Center, the Yotes got blanked last night in Carolina (though, statistically speaking, it was a close game) ......and that trip home from Raleigh is/was tougher than the Pens' from Denver. But even more, Raanta got beat last night by the Jerks, which presumably would have led to the Pens seeing (with Darcy Kuemper injured).Yotes backup Adin Hill in goal.

But since Raanta gets a day off, he'll presumably play tomorrow.
