Pens Offseason/ rest of NHL playoffs

'Here’s your Geno info...only a handful of teams would be interested, close to a cup but lacking a star with deep prospects and cap space, Florida, Carolina, islanders, Buffalo were ones he thought would fit. Also said Geno doesn’t have the best locker room reputation and is known as a bit of a headcase so teams would be wary. Apparently Sid does a lot of work to keep him in check. Would likely fetch you a mix of picks and prospects but not a current grade A younger player. He also asked me what was with the Pens questions lol...One of his buddies is a Pens scout and they talk a lot about both their teams. They are already calling around about Phil and Geno'

Well, I get the impression Jason Botterill might be lucky to be getting one more year in Buffalo as GM (after that second half crash which cost Housley).....so he strikes me as someone who actually might consider an all-in-on-2019/20 kind-of Malkin deal. Which, of course, begs the question as to how he feels about Geno personally.....probably knows him as well as anyone currently in the game outside Pittsburgh (except perhaps Rick Tocchet).....and is he the kind of player on whom he's willing to bet his job.

Presumably, JB's new hire as HC might provide at least some broad indication as to whether Geno and the Sabres could be good for one another. Florida also strikes me as a reasonable possibility if they can't/don't close on Breadman. FWIW, something in the back of my mind tells me Geno might indeed like to play and (especially) live down in Sunrise. Regardless......and for the record......I'm pretty sure Geno has a full NMC, so it's his decision no matter what.

Meanwhile, how do you guys feel about Matt Murray playing for Canada in the Worlds ?? I presume he's the #1 guy ahead of Blackwood and Hart and will (at least) start in the big games against the US, Russia, Sweden, and Finland. I freely admit I'm worried about injury; but it will be interesting to see how well he takes ownership of Canada's crease.

Also trying to decide if Jake Guentzel should have made the US team......

The US team looks VERY deep to my eyes but I would think with that goal total he would be an automatic? Did he decline an offer to play? Not sure. Also had a feeling Helebycuk (sp) would make the team?

Yes I am quite ecstatic to see MM on the team and presumably as the starter, although HART had a decent latter half to my recollection. In saying that...PLEASE DON'T GET INJURED #30...wishful thinking perhaps.

Funny thing is wife and I were looking at a Euro trip about six months back for spring and upon realization that it was in Bratislava, looked at flights / hotels in Czech and Slovakia. They were surprisingly quite reasonable.
Too late now...I have NO money till late summer.

Re Malkin /Botterill... it is a damned interesting possibility would think. Go on Jason, give Geno a call, massage his ego and have him shuffle off to Buffalo. Maybe Sheary could be talked into the babysitting job? He likely filled in once or twice in the past when Sid was too busy...

One question milling in my mind....will we FINALLY see some offer sheets around the league this summer on the RFA's? Enough of this bullshit, take the gloves off already... make it interesting.

I'm having a hard time watching the canes dominate the islanders and think of what could have been had malkin, letang and kessel wanted to play to win this post season.

I was at Mon County Ballpark watching rangy, left-handed hurler Snyder get within one strike of a no-hitter. It was a shame the Moo U hitter got the little, dinky infield hit to ruin it. 16 K's for the big guy! Beautiful evening to boot!

It was my fault.....I was following along on game cast and turned the video on for the 9th. I jinxed him

Listening to NHL radio on the drive in as well as reading DK Sports, seems like Fat Phil is gone even if it is simply a trade of bad contracts. DK thinks Maatta is gone too. That won't upset me in the least. But that isn't the entire issue here. Malkin sucked the entire 2nd half of the season and playoffs....-25 or whatever it was evidenced that he just didn't give a damn. Rusty was streaky as hell. Horny looks old. Pukestad's effort was terribly inconsistent. Simon may never be anything more than a 4th liner. ZAR needs to get past the injury issues and contribute consistently. Cullen probably won't be back but while his wheels are still there, his hands are shot. He still was almost as good as Simon playing his low-minute 4th line role though.

From watching these playoffs, this team needs an injection of energy or needs to shed the low energy guys. No way around that. These playoffs clearly highlight the terrible effort level the Pens exhibited over the 4 games. I thought Sid played hard overall in the playoffs. But watching Justin Williams of the Canes go 100 mph all game long even puts Sid's effort level in question. The Pens need consistent play from the D. Maatta, Letang, and Petterson need to consistently good and can't have these games where they aren't mentally engaged or just careless in their execution (especially Letang).

Changes have to me made now to culture of team structure. The window for winning is closing quickly.

while I agree completely, it has been this way for the past 40 years. I don't see it changing now.

One thing that does impress me...much to my chagrin is this Blojax D. They are 3 starters short and one could argue have been a better lineup than when all their guys are healthy. Damn!
I look forward to seeing some of this game tonight.

I don't see what the NHL has to gain here other than losing boatloads of coin? I guess it's good for some kind of PR but not enough with the $$$ they will have to put out for ANY sort of viability.

In saying that the lady was totally robbed in the fastest skater competition...give the girl her due...

fvck her and her little skates.

McCann joins Murray for Team Canada... I want #30 to pitch a shutout and McCann with a hattie vs you Mericans so you all can have some spite at me... particularly @Irwineer2 .

seriously, who cares? if they played these games at a different time of year, I may be interested but in the middle of the playoffs, it sucks.

Lol! YOU care if your boys win...and if they beat Canada in the process (which they likely will with a deeper roster) I'll never hear the end of it from you!
It at least gives me some semblance of rooting interest with a few of our guys sprinkled through the various teams, and two (whom I actually like compared to some on the Pens roster) for the Red and White specific. I like good hockey and both international and the Cup playoffs bring that imo. I just wish the games were live broadcast in evening...besides WTF do I care about ANY of these teams left? A rooting interest goes a long way...

I don't think you will ever see the Pens looking like the Bryan Murray Capitals of the 80's where they played hard almost every night and never could hit that next gear in the playoffs.

You thought the culture of the club or work ethic was poor in 2008 and 2009? There were some bad years after that no doubt. 2016 and 2017? I actually thought the Pens were in a good spot this year until they just started listing badly after a few injuries. They never recovered any momentum.

And most teams would be ecstatic with winning 5 cups the last 40 years. But yes, changes need to be made.

Yes , yes and yes...our fan base as I think we all know , well over 50% of em could be kicked to the curb imo if not for the fact they drive some revenue. That particular faction (which as you also know I include none of the regulars here in), have NO CLUE of both what they had or the game frankly, the frontrunners.
In saying that I thought the 90's cup teams did have a fair amount of pushback on the roster with guys like Ulfie and Stevens. And although I would like to see more fundamental hockey with some jam/ strength. I will take ANY brand that WINS....exception being some sleep inducing Jacques Lemaire Devils/Wild et al, trap crap.
It has been fun to watch Sid and crew dominate (when they CHOOSE too) over the last decade, but ya it's time for a rework roster wise and style of play wise. Wishful thinking likely...

How can a guy like Geno be so dominating at times and other times play like he wished he was vacationing on the Caspian Sea? Then again when I see his bride, I can see why he might not focus on the ice.......

I have never in my life watched the world championships with any vested interest.

Hmmm...ya, that dummy.
It's not the loafing that bugs me so much (take your pick of about a half dozen others that do same), it's his zero between the ears penalties that make my blood boil. This birdbrain leads the team in PIM's and for why? Imagine if he took half the amount? He instantly becomes a tangibly better player, and that would be scary good. But no...he dumbs it down.

I actually have a signed Malkin jersey framed in my man cave and most days lately I wanna legit smash it.... Actually, better idea... I'd happily take a loss and trade it for a McCann, Schultz, Murray, DeSmith, or any other plumber on the team that actually gives a $hit!

Any takers? Talk to me lol...

I have cut the lawn ONCE thusfar not that it needed it but to simply do something and mulch up a bunch of leaves and the odd dogshit bomb I missed...I'm done with this garbage weather.
