Pens-Sens

Check out these unofficial TOI stats for the Pens defense.....
  • 26:08 Dumoulin
  • 24:49 Hainsey
  • 22:33 Maatta
  • 21:25 Ruhwedel
  • 20:20 Cole
  • 3:40 Schultz
I'm surprised Cole was last....meanwhile, I think their entire defense (including Hainsey and Ruhwedel) were very good tonight. Fortunately, the Sens non-attacking style helped them survive the loss of Schultz.

Their trap is just deadly...fortunately we saw FEW Karlsson highlights tonight. I honestly cant say enough about the effort out of the forwards and especially the D so depleted to keep the puck in their zone...it was really something else imo...Matta with the Helmet tonight or Phil? Cole? Wow...I vote Olli....

I didn't watch the Sens closely in the first 2 rounds, but I find myself wondering if this may have been Karlsson's least effective game thus far in the 2017 playoffs. Maybe tonight is an indication he's slowly beginning to slow down......

Cole should get the most minutes. All those minutes for Hainsey....yikes! Is that what Sully wants or JR because he made the trade?

Say what you will about Streit.....and I myself was quite critical of him late in the season when it was obvious he's got no wheels left......but still, the Pens are fortunate to have a veteran like him that far down the defensive roster ready to play with 3/4 of their Top 4 (presumably) out of the lineup on Wednesday.

JMO, but I thought Hainsey was pretty damned solid tonight.....

No arguement here....and yes If it's Streit then thats what it will be...I imagine he is just champing to get in...this will be a tough call for Sully if Daley is on the bubble health wise...
Pretty frustating 2 games for the pens. Ottawa is doing a good job of botteling up the neutral zone. Im surprised at the success they,ve had up to this point of slowing down the pens. I watched a good bit of the rangers sens series and outside of games 1 and 6 the rangers were able to find holes in the ottawa defense. In the west I was frustrated with the preds in game 2 they started strong but got a little lazy in the 2nd period and Rinne didn't play well. They got 1 out of 2 which is what most would hope for so will see what happens in Smashville.

Game 2 helmet to Scotty Wilson for last night's 10 hit performance.....

Well some praise for the Pens up here today, especially the D efforts so short manned...and many completely skewering the Sens for playing the way they did last night , although to yours truly no surprise really...Stephen Brunt Globe and Mail columnest and a writer I quite respect - 'Sure I'd like to hope for a Canadian team to win, but not this one. Playing that way at 0-0 , with 3 of Pittsburgh's top defensemen out, is flat out embarrassing' ...The Pens did an admirable job forcing the play for the last 2 imo, but I gotta say to not display at least a bit more attack on The Sens part? Well...reap what you sow Boucher, you're NOT gonna win like that imo, no matter who the Pens are missing... and that's just fine by me I guess.

One other thing they mentioned...do you guys have any clue of what lines you expect Boucher to throw out there??? I think he has used every combo in the book, and it seems to be causing confusion on their bench...so much so that they have taken an inordinate number of too many men penalties this playoff, 4 apparently!!! Keep it up...The Pens will happily take the extra PP time...

I'm curious as to what Ottawa we'll see at home. I'm fairly confident in what we will see from The Pens in comparison.

Replays of the Kessel fits and Geno jabbing back a few times I have to admit were amusing in a way...especially the look on Kunitz face in between them lol! If that style of theatrics is what it takes to get 81 going, I WILL TAKE IT! So strange seeing that outta likely the quietest guy in the whole damn league.
Anyone hear anything on Schultz, Rust, Daley today? Pens likely giving minimal info in that respect I assume....

The game 1 loss is on me...

I eked out the game 2 win...

should win it in 5 now...

what a week...

I was traveling in Cleveland today.......and NHLN was broadcasting IIHF games from TSN all afternoon....and i just arrived in Ann Arbor a few minutes ago; so I heard veru little Sens-Pens coverage today.

However I get the distinct impression Boucher's protect-the-house-to-the-exclusion-of-everything-else philosophy didn't win him too many fans last night; I think the Sens were viewed to have blown a very nice chance (with all the Pens' injuries) to have swept in Pittsburgh.

Probably the biggest story was all of Kessel and Geno's moaning on the bench. I still think it......Kessel's carrying-on in particular.....was downright hysterical. And if nobody else felt that way, Kunitz sure as hell did. Anyway, I myself couldn't care less if those two are pissed off at one another on the ice this year anymore than I cared how much Horndog and Sid were grousing at one another last year.

Meanwhile, nothing positive I can see thus far concerning status of Schultz, Rusty, Daley, or Horndog today.....though I think they all traveled to Ottawa. The only one of the four I think with even a remote chance to dress for Game 3 is Horndog.

Sully said today Shultz, Rust and Daley are Day to day. Lol! It was also reported Shultz looked fine and didn't have a sling on his shoulder and was even carrying his bag with his right arm. Apparently all three traveled to Ottawa today.

What I love about this Pens team is that they can beat you playing any style. Wanna up tempo, Pens win 6-5. Wanna clog the neautral zone and trap? Pens win 1-0. Perhaps the most resilient Pens teams I've ever seen. And what else can you say about Flower?

Returning to home ice I think the Sens are gonna feel pressured to speed things up and take more chances to please the home crowd. If that happens the Pens might just blow them out tomorrow night. Key once again is getting that first goal early in the game. Gotta get in Anderson's head and get the Sens to chasing. I'm feeling mighty good about tomorrow night boys.

I love the FIRE Phil is showing! If he keeps that attitude and I keep grilling those Kessel dogs in between periods he's gonna keep lighting it up! Lol! I told my crew last night we needed some good mojo for the 3rd so I grilled a pack of hot dogs. Was pretty funny when Phil lit the lamp.

Oh, the biggest news out of Pens camp today was the hiring of former NHLN TV anchor (and Pittsburgh native) Steve Mears as their new TV play-by-play guy on ROOT Sports replacing Paul Steigerwald. I don't believe the change affects Bob Errey.

According to DK, Steigerwald has been around the Pens since 1980, and working broacasts since 1985 (I think he was a publicity guy to start). My personal guess is that ROOT was simply looking to reduce costs, and 30 year guys are probably fairly well paid.

Fortunately for Steigy, it appears he's re-joining the team in a marketing/communications support role....and he may still do some broadcast work (like pre-games or between periods). At least the organization was good (and loyal) enough not to dump the long-timer out with the trash. As for Mears, I believe he did some P-b-P during the WCH, and I seem to recall him being fairly decent. I myself think it's a good time for some new blood behind the Pens TV microphone.

Not that anyone asked......and while I don't have anything against Steigerwald......I don't expect to miss him that much in the P-b-P booth.

I've always liked Steigy and will miss his homerism. I'm sure the new guy will be good but it won't be the same.

Agree Ron...always enjoyed his take even if a homer...so this Mears fella is good guys? I see he has been an NHL Network fixture so that can't be so bad?......just curious...you guys like Errey? I personally find him a bit pompous but thats just my take....as long as Pierre is not 'demoted' to my weeknight broadcasts then I'm all good...but then you guys know that lament from me lol

I'm OK with Errey; he's in no danger of being hired by HNIC or NBCSN.....and will never be mistaken for Eddie O......but I consider him perfectly acceptable as a local homer in a world of Phil Espositos, Craig Laughlins (Craps), Jody Shelleys (Blojax) and Andy Brickleys (B's).

I have no love for him personally. At least the radio guys in Bourque and Lange will call the Pens out occasionally when they aren't playing well or take a bad penalty. Rarely heard anything critical from the TV side.

Lunchtime perspective from DK's Matt Gatjka:
  • Horndog, Rusty, and Schultz all expected to be out tonight; Schultz was said to have skated a bit this morning, took a few casual wristers, and then left. No apparent sign of Horndog and Rusty at all. Meanwhile, Daley was said to have been working out with his regular D-partner, Maatta.
  • Gatjka believes the Pens may dress 7 defense tonight (Dumo-Hainsey, Maatta-Daley, Cole-Ruhwedel, and Streit) even though HCMS is said to be against it; reason being it gives the team an out if Daley's knee doesn't hold up. Plus, it positions Streit to move into the top PP pairing as needed. FWIW, Streit was skating in practice with Cam Gaunce this morning; obviously, no sign of the late, not very lamented Derrick Pouliot.
  • Cullen and Rowney.....who appears to have cleanly beaten-out Kuhnhackl, at least for the present.....would skate with rotating off-wingers if they go to 7-D.
Now, COOL MAN's unwanted/uneducated opinions:
  • I don't know how the Pens win the first road game of this series with so many starters out, unless......and how many times have we said it this playoff season.....Flower stands on his head.
  • I'd feel more enthused if Sid wasn't playing so blah (or hurt) lately, and if Geno still wasn't lapsing into indifference for such extended lengths of time. I also don't think the loss of Horndog can be overstated against an opponent who spends so much time mucking up the slot.
  • I assume Phaneuf will pick up where he left off on Monday night, so the Pens forwards better have their heads on a swivel. From what I can tell, Methot hasn't realy had his hitman radar running this series. Maybe that changes on home ice.....
  • I myself don't think the Sens will materially change their bunker-mentality style tonight; Boucher obviously believes it works, plus he's not the kind of coach who'll be influenced by the media or the fans' peanut gallery. Besides, it's not like his team was out of Game 2 at any time, even though they essentially ignored the Pens goal for a full 1/3 of the game.

Is this a definitive Ron? The boys are takin this one tonight?.......tell me it is

Keeping my fingers crossed the Lord is rooting for the Pens tonight...... :victory::pray:

"Old time" Flower on the GA......he owes his team a couple big saves now to offset.

Cant believe I am still subjecting myself to this punishment....but then...I made the mistake of inviteing a bunch of Sens folk over tonight....please Pens...dont subject me to this ABUSE 2 games in a row...PLEASE!!!!

Need to shitcan this one, oh, by about right now.......nothing constructive to take from an ass-kicking like this one, anymore than Game 6 versus the Craps. No matter how you slice it, the Pens played a way better opponent tonight.

One of the things that you can't deny is that the Sens have a significantly better goaltender than anyone they've played in this year's playoffs. Doesn't appear as though Anderson will give up too many......if any.....softies; that more than anything else hugely separate the Sens from either the Blojax or Craps.

Admittedly, it's only Game 3......still lots of hockey left to play in this series......but right now, it does not look good for them.

Getting justifiably roasted in the postgame; and it's going to continue for the next 48 hours.

Probably the best thing that can happen to this team, especially if effort is the reason why they got beaten so badly tonight. Unfortunately, they're not going get that much healthier in 48 hours. I assume Schultz and Rusty will still be out, and I still don't know what happened to Horndog.

Capping this one is the news that Malkin was 1-10 on faceoffs tonight; great job, Geno.

My neighbor and I discussing that fact on Geno, before tonights puck drop...he actually said 'how is Geno looking so good at times but losing so many faceoffs?' And I honestly had no answer...they are also getting under his skin, just egging him, goading him to a trip to the box, they aren't stupid in that respect....or in tonights case a misconduct It looked like? We had the volume a bit down and the replays didnt show much? Did the refs just say enough already Geno? We had the PP right after?

I am justifyably gonna RAISE HELL in that arena Friday night boys...They will hear me, voice will be hoarse....this I ,and certainly the wife here assures you lol....they will feel my presence as will Sens fans, like it or not...if you don't hear from me Saturday? Send out the search party lol....

Im sure the effort will be better on Friday. Pens defense was skating in mud the 1st period tonight.
