Pens -- FEB 2018

The folks round here think they have Boston licked...I tend to agree...Boston or Tampa will be there in the East final...

Right now.....and even though I still believe they're the best team in the League.....I'd rather play Tampa than the B's. Of course, my attitude could be entirely different 30 days from today.

A win against the 9th place Hurricanes Friday would give the Pens a 12 point lead in the standings over the Canes.....pretty much locking up a playoff spot with 20 games to go barring catastrophe.

Looking at the standings this morning, the only team in the hunt behind the Pens (in total points, that is) playing well right now in the entire Eastern Conference is Philadelphia (they're 1 point behind with a game in hand). Jersey currently is only 4 points behind the Pens, but they're playing no better than .500 hockey right now.

Happily, the Division has finally made up most of their games in hand on the Pens. Everyone is within 1 game of one another with the exception of Columbus (still 2 games in hand, but 9 points behind them in the standings). So, at least that variable is largely eliminated.

I'd think the Pens are pretty close to a lock for the playoffs now, but they should have legitimate eyes on 1st in the Metro. With 40 points still available to them the rest of the season, I'd think they have a fairly decent shot at earning at least 30 if they avoid major injury.

Agree completely. Still pains me to think that the likely 2nd round metro match-up is Pens vs Caps. You would think at some point the NHL would address this nonsense and seed the conferences 1 thru 8.

I don't disagree with you, but either Boston or Tampa isn't going to make it out of the 2nd round......and that's going to be the League's biggest tragedy this year.

Meanwhile, don't just assume Washington is a sure bet to survive the 1st Round this year; mostly because there's something currently amiss with Braden Holtby. Much like Columbus with Bob; if the Craps can't just blindly run Holtby out there every night in the playoffs.....and assume he's going to play well.....they've got a major issue to resolve aside figuring out how to beat the Pens.

If you didn't hear about it, the NYR traded Mike Grabner to the Devils yesterday for a #2 and what sounds like a fair-decent Russian D-man prospect (now in the KHL). That's a deal I don't see how the Pens could match for a rental if Jersey preferred a D-man prospect to a forward.

DK keeps reporting that GMJR is still all-in on making a deal, though it might be more minor than major. Meanwhile, the Pens seemingly remain in the heart all the Derick Brassard talk....supposedly the reason why they ended up dropping out of the Grabner derby. But I find it hard to believe there aren't other contenders who can put together a better deal (that is, unless the Pens are most serious).

FWIW, one Pensburgh rumor proposes Brassard in exchange for Jarry and #4,.

Well, here it is:

To Ottawa: D Ian Cole, 2018 #1 pick, G Filip Gustavsson
To Pittsburgh: Derick Brassard at 82% of current salary (Ottawa retains 18% according to NHLN Radio)

Cole is apparently expected to be flipped by the Sens by the trade deadline. Anyone who doesn't think GMJR is all in for 3 in a row isn't paying attention.

Oh....and my Ottawa pals? They are cheesed right off beyond belief...going apoplectic! [roll].....although much of this anguish is likely because they are going to rip the team to shreads

i hate giving up gustavsson here. i bet he goes down as the best player in the trade when all their careers are over.

At 445PM, NHLN Radio is saying the deal is not official, supposedly due to a 3rd team possibly being involved.....and also some possible questions remaining about details of the deal (like retained money, for example). But Bob McKenzie is said to be reporting the deal with the previous geometry, so it's generally considered a pretty solid report.

But neither team has evidently confirmed the deal to this point......

The rumor at 515PM EST is that the 3rd team involved is Vegas.......and it has to do with retained dollars (and Brassard's overall impact on the Pens' cap).

Bill Watters is theorizing that Ottawa actually trades Brassard to Vegas, who then flips him to the Pens in return for some kind of yet to be determined asset. The end result would be that both Ottawa AND Vegas end up retaining some of Brassard's contract dollars.

Now there's some interesting geometry.....AND MCKENZIE IS NOW REPORTING THIS IDEA OF A 3RD INVOLVED PARTY AS WELL.

And officially rejected by league...damn!...although I hear all parties are trying to make it work...get this done!

He might be. But we’re all in NOW! If we win a 3rd it’s all worth it.
Hey! Welcome back @WVRON ! You've been missed...we need those on point predicts again this year lol...agreed, trade away whatever the hell they have to in order to get the needed pieces for this run. 3peat is an official dynasty imo.

reaves getting scratched... any chance they are moving him or did horny/sharey take his spot?

BTW gents...congrats to your Team USA girls (and PK's sister) in victory the other day in what was a heck of a hockey game as usual between the two teams. Stayed up late to watch and was worth it for the entertainment.
