Pens December

Those Oil jerseys? LOL!

You know, I kinda' liked those Oil unis (and Smith's mask). Of course, I liked that uni they wore previously with the bronze accent way more than the current colors.......oh, and for the record, I liked the Guins black pigeon uni. :D

Agreed re: with the bronze.... those ones last night though were hurting my eyes a bit. The colour rendering (orange) reminded me of the ones the Oregon Beavers football wore last year I think?

Happily, I dozed through that 0 SOG 1st Period, but saw that 2nd where the Canucks spent the whole period skating backward......and that Markstrom stopped essentially everything. Other than that, I thought it just one of those games where they weren't destined to beat the opposing goaltender, and maybe they just wanted to get back home after being away all week and start vacation.

Don't know if the Pens hung Murray out to dry or not......if so, fair enough.....but everyone should know they're NOT going to be playing any kind of decent defense with their injuries. Meanwhile, 4 GA on 14 SOG just isn't going to cut it, no matter the overall circumstances......and we all know you simply need your goaltender to steal games for you on occasion; like Jarry has done HOW many times this season (and Markstrom did last night).

Maybe Murray's performance indicated rust; perhaps understandable given how little he's played recently. And of course, I have no clue whatsoever if Jarry would have done any better last night.

Just read my first post game accounts, and see Murray was victimized on a really bad 5 on 3 (which presumably accounted for t's comment about the stripes). Meanwhile, Murray was also credited for some strong saves in that miserable 1st.

One more ugly stat.......Pens were 21-39 in faceoffs (Geno 9-15 and Teddy an equally miserable 5-11).

Murray was good until they needed that big stop down 2-1.....instead he barfs up a big rebound and the game was over.

Hey t, I see the Dallandrea-kid scored one the other day in that pre-Juniors warmup against the Finns. Will be keeping my eye on him beginning later this week.

I also saw this morning that Dallandrea was given an "A" by Canada..... obviously, they consider him a leader.

This small town will explode should the lad score one today...
I get the sense you guys are the favourite in this one. Usually to my recollection these two teams get a few gimmie games before the big showdown. It'll be interesting to see who has the jump early this afternoon. Meanwhile I'm hopeful that Peterborough Pete Robertson has a great tourney for USA...just not today lol.
Best of luck all, it's on! Love this time of year.

I guess we all better be prepared to expect the no longer pesky but powerhouse Fins to give their best efforts this tourney again. 3 of the last 6 WJHC with a Gold result? Pretty damn good for a country of 5.5 mil...

Well that was a different 2nd from both teams...I know one thing. If both these squads continue taking bad penalties like this rest of tourney? The Fins and Swedes will waste them...

I'd say great game guys but perhaps exciting is a better term after all the penalties on both sides.

Just saw the final score.....from everything I heard leading up to the tournament, the USA's greatest strength was said to be in goal. Maybe Canada has the most lethal offense in the event; but the (supposedly) best goaltender in the tournament can't be giving up 5 GA in 31 shots (and 3 PP goals).

Obviously, still early and lots of hockey left to play.....but today simply CAN'T be a good development for the USA.

I'll be brutally honest...neither team was as good as they should have been...we are both in trouble imo.

Fair enough......and I've also learned it's essentially illegal to overlook the Finns (as you've stated previously) in this tournament anymore

According to DK, Rinne is starting tonight for the Preds, which I personally don't think is much of a surprise.....he also reports Horndog is skating with the Pens at their morning skate. Not sure that necessarily means he's dressing tonight, though you'd think he wouldn't want to pass up a chance to play in his old barn if at all possible.

No word/theory yet as to the Pens' starter in goal tonight.....though I think Jarry is the first in goal at the skate.

Horndog will not play tonight......and it doesn't sound like he'll dress tomorrow night at home either. But DK said Sully referred to him as "close to being a coach's decision". Meanwhile, Sid continues to skate at home while Tricky Nicky evidently skated today for the first time.

Fnally, neither Dumo nor Schultzie are skating as yet.

BTW, if you were wondering (as I was) as to the Pens upcoming schedule after this weekend's back-to-backer with the Preds:
  • MON 12/30 -- OTT
  • THU 1/2 -- SJS
  • SAT 1/4 -- at MTL
  • SUN 1/5 -- FLA
As for the rest of January in advance of the ASG, they have a very tough away schedule; Vegas, Colorado, Arizona, Boston, and the Cryers (plus the Dead Wings) over an 8 game stretch where they only play twice at home. Obviously, January is where their home-weighted schedule finally begins to level out.

With that kind of schedule, it'll sure be nice to get Sid back on the ice (hopefully in the next week-ish)......and maybe get Dumo or Schultzie back, too.

I'll happily take a split this weekend and pray for the walking dead to get some help back asap....and STAY HEALTHY. They've managed incredibly well over the last month or two...

One more thing I read during the break......did you realize the Guins were 2nd in the League in GA (96) ??

Of course, the 11 teams immediately behind them on the list have played more games.....the Stars in 3rd (97) have played 2 more games, while the Yotes, tied for 4th with the Blues (99) have played 3 more games.

But still, I consider that pretty impressive considering the overall lack of respect the Pens defense (even at full strength) and goaltending gets from most everyone.
