Pens - - DEC 2016

Lake SCUGOG [thumbsup] what a fabulous name......one you couldn't possibly find anywhere other than rural Canada. Trying to decide how that's actually pronounced: “SKOO-guhg“ perhaps ??? Curious if you've ever ended up on Hometown Hockey......

Meanwhile, be sure to keep those elbows up in the corners [thumb2]
I believe the community has entered a few times but hasn't come close to winning unfortunately. Plenty of hockey kids around here in a town of 14,000, with 2 large ice pads and a Junior 'C' team the 'Mojacks' so maybe down the road!
It is quite the unique name isn't it lol...it comes from Ojibwe Native language of which there is a reserve 10 mins from home here in town...on the island. There is a large charity casino the first nation runs there, which is the basis of their economy nowadays.
The name means 'marshy land', likely referencing before the lake was actually created in the early 1800's as a result of a dam upriver. Today the lake is a fair size, originally a cottage/cabin locale which has morphed into more permanent homes in being so close to Toronto, Oshawa, and Peterborough where many work. Max depth is 25 ft, although the majority of the lake is roughly 8 to 10 ft deep, which makes it fairly weedy in spots (the north end has some beautiful beach sand areas however), and thus great for fishing Bass, Walleye and some BIG Muskie close to the large marsh down at the south end. The depth also allows for a quick freeze come winter...I actually saw a few snowmobiles this morning on my walk tempting fate after about a week and half freeze? By next week if the temps continue sub zero I expect to see hundreds out there with the holidays!

And yes damn close on pronunciation CM! 'SKOO-GAWG' ....

According to the morning papers; the Pens don't seem to be all that upset at how last night came down; it appears they feel.......and I honestly don't disagree.....as though they played well enough to win, and the loss was "just one of those things".

We all know goaltenders do single-handedly win games, so this is one you have to grudgingly give to Budaj and then you move on. And Murray....who I do think has shown a fairly level head about these kinds of things.....was candid enough to support my personal assertion the game winner was a bad goal.

Good enough; so let's move on and hope tonight doesn't show the team.....after winning the 7 straight...... is ready to come back somewhat violently to earth, especially with Philly and Columbus continuing their own longer winning streaks.
BTW...quick aside as I know you enjoy to hear of the OHL from time to time CM...
My Petes are now on a 7 game win streak ( sound familiar lol), and breathing down the dirtbag Oshawa Gens necks for first in the East Conference! Been a long time since we can say this! Times have been lean over the last few years , squeaking their way into the playoffs most seasons. Hopeful this hot streak continues in the dog days of winter. This edition of the team is...well, just that, a team. Sound goalkeeping, solid D and a bunch of lunch pail plumbers up front.

Erie and London 2 usual suspects are really tearing up the West, with The Soo Greyhounds also making some noise.

Looking at heading to Ottawa and the Canadian Tire Centre mid December (for the first time) to visit relatives , Pens / Sens on a Thurs eve, and wind our way back through Kingston on Friday night for The Petes vs Frontenacs...it is a beauty mid sized arena there ( we actually saw a Sting concert there a few years back), and the town itself is also quite historic...

I need to continue visiting road venues and bring luck vs showing my unlucky ass to PPG ! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Now...LET'S GO PENS!!!!

Hughson...such an ass...'Murray's been stopping it but is having all kinds of trouble controlling it' really Jim? Like how the puck was literally dug from his glove earlier? ....and in comes Flower...

So, China Doll Carey gives up 4 goals on 18 shots last night......and Therrein just couldn't wait to pull him in the 2nd to protect him from the no-show MT essentially accused his teammates from pulling. In other words, no Al Montoya treatment for China Doll......of course, CD is already being defended this morning as having "glared" at Therrein upon leaving the ice.

Of course, the HNIC crew will also leap to CD's (and MT's) defense tonight because China Doll simply HAS has to be protected in advance of tonight's start versus Washington. I gotta tell you, I've really grown to dislike Price this year...... and this deflector shield the NHL media north of the border has built around him.
And...newsflash...as predicted! The old dinosaur hops right on board the Price express! I LOVE the fact that Montoya shakes his head at Price on his way to the net...is it ever obvious they hate each other lol.
I have some pretty serious disdain for Therrein, for somewhat obvious reasons...however are we seeing something similar to the other China Doll P Roy developing here? I honestly couldn't stand his prima Donna attitude. I think these Montreal goalies past and present believe far too much in their own myth, held up as saviours on a pedestal ...am I wrong?

Why am I pineing for the 3rd period as usual? I know we are down Tanger and Daley but this is pathetic...paint is gonna peel off the wall in that visiting locker room right now....I hope!

Aside the fact they lost, did you notice Hughson and Simpson never said a blessed word about the Pens having played Friday night (while the Leaves were fully rested); whereas when the two teams played earlier this season......and the Leaves were playing THEIR second consecutive night (while the Pens were the rested team).....these guys absolutely wouldn't shut up about it the entire game ??

I'll give the Leaves credit; they've got the youth and speed to skate with the Pens. But having lost their magic offensive touch (as of Friday night) after scoring all those goals during the streak.....which obviously wasn't going to last......the Pens obviously need good defensive play (and goaltending) to win low scoring games; which they largely got (at least on paper) each of the last two nights. But they obviously lost BOTH (even though they got a point in each), which especially hurts because they had MORE than enough opportunities to earn the 2 points in either game.

Obviously, the loss of their 2 best skating defenseman is huge......especially against high-tempo teams like the Leaves. But with the Rangers and Blue Jackets on this week's schedule, they better start finding the back of the net again soon, or this could be a week they lose touch with the top of the Division.

And with Sid's personal hot streak in roughly the same condition as the now-dead winning streak, it's about time guys like Hornqvist, Kunitz, Bonino, and Hagelin quit going out for a skate every night and start contributing offensively.

Well said indeed...especially re: the four horsemen listed. I love the speed element Hags brings to the table, but I am starting to wonder whether he has any sort of nose for the net at all anymore? Also found myself wondering why I didn't see Horny anywhere near the net last night to my recollection? The Leaves are a decidedly weak kneed D, why wouldn't you park yourself in front and make them move you / create headaches for Andersen?
And yes I do recall those 2 jibber jabbering all night the last time these teams played, about the schedule...I actually muted the volume for much of the second period last night. Where is Bob Cole or even Chris Cuthbert when you need them? Hughson is nauseating at times....

Let's hope at least one of Tanger or Trevor gets back soon...Schultz cannot do the job to that level, although I see him trying to do so admirably. Without that calming presence, and keen puck distribution skills it's trouble!

Back perhaps a month ago on a telecast, one of the broadcasters made a comment (as is fairly routine) about Hags' jet-like skating. However, he followed up with another stating it's pretty clear his hands don't match his skates; for if they did, he'd be among the most dangerous in the business..

Even since hearing that comment, I can't seem to get it out of my mind. Hagelin obviously does some good things, and he's remains a reasonably valuable member of this team. But it's pretty clear he's some distance from being a complete player....Rangers' fans knew it, thought I think they still largely liked him......and that comment rushed to my mind after that relatively pedestrian save Andersen had to make on Hags' penalty shot.

Lord knows he's not the only guy who gets stopped under those circumstances, but I recall thinking at the time the Leaves might be fortunate to have the PS call rather than the Pens getting the 2 minute PP. But for Hags to be effective as a 13-16 MPG 3rd liner, he's simply got to be a consistently disruptive force on the defensive and PK side......which I don't feel he's been thus far this season.....because he's probably never going to be the consistent 17-20 goal guy you'd like to see from a long-term $4 million contract.

At the rate he's going now, he'll be hugely lucky to score 10 goals in 2016-17; and it's probably not going to get better until/unless HCMS puts HBK back together again......which doesn't seem likely the way Kessel has been working lately with Geno. As for Tanger and Daley, it doesn't appear as though either will be back much before the New Year.

And I'm wondering if Hornqvist is playing hurt, because he's hardly touching the puck......and I only recall him mixing things up in a disruptive way once last night.

I seem to recall reading the Sens were having trouble selling tickets earlier in the season; will you have to scalp the Pens tix, or can you buy them online (or perhaps at the CEC box office) ??

But as US hockey fan, I'm just SO jealous that you can double up the Pens at Sens with a Major J game.....and with the Petes on the road, to boot

I will likely go stubhub route...found some (relatively speaking) great deals there during the 1st and 3rd rounds last year's playoff.
I have no doubt they are having issues with tix this year...and likely will until the new digs are built downtown in (from what I hear ) 4-5 years from now. That arena is literally a monolith in the middle of nowheresville, strikingly similar to the Florida setup actually.
Perhaps those building new facilities have finally got it now? Downtown is where the action is. People will stick around after work for the game during the week and if it's on the wknd then they often don't mind driving in for the game with a bit less traffic...Florida, Ottawa, Arizona et al? This is a major contributing factor to franchise failure imo.

Fortunately our relatives actually live in Kanata, which is very convenient to the arena about 5 mins away...

From the "who gives a shit what COOL MAN thinks about this" Department......if you're like me  you've been wondering why Sid recently grew one of his scraggly "beards", and why he followed up by all of a sudden shaving it off in time (I think) for Saturday night's game.

Well, I see he put in an appearance yesterday (along with a couple others) at the Hockey Hall of Fame apparently to present a 2016 Stanley Cup ring to the Hall for display. I have to assume this is something of a tradition; that the defending Champs make such a presentation each year on their first trip to Toronto after receipt of their rings.

Anyway, since this is presumably a pretty big deal for those involved...... and represents at least SOME reflection on the franchise.....I have to assume Sid rightly realized he better clean up in advance of going before the HHOF cameras. So, it appears he finally decided to buy a razor and a can of Barbasol and actually put them to use so that he doesn't look in perpetuity like a homeless person in related pictures.

All that said.....since it's hardly his best look to begin with..... I honestly don't know why he grew the "beard" in the first place. I guess I've been thinking it might have had to do with the "no shave November" thing my son used to do each year when he was in school. Of course, November came and went quite a while ago, so........

And there is Horny in front of the hemp hut! ....where the heck are you fellas tonight lol? Hopefully CM is outta Ann Arbor by now!

RUST! From Sid! ....looking like a good bounce back tonight gents. All facets working well...D is managing to keep up too ...good on em!

Well, back in Detroit for the 3rd week in a row......and staying in yet another hotel without NHLN :weary:

But I just turned on Lange and ol' 2-9'er on Sirius, and heard the Graebner, Schultz, and (now) Rusty goals. I like that the Pens have scored 5 tonight.....meaning Vigneault is going to get roasted in NYC now for benching King Henrik......with more 14:00 to play.

Meanwhile, I'd like to see MM shut the door on the NYR the rest of the way.

One final Sales call tomorrow here in suburban Detroit, then back home immediately afterward.......then on the road Thursday to Chicago with my wife and daughter to spend a few pre-Christmas days with our son.

Will likely miss the big game Thursday night vs the Blue Jackets......leaving it in your hands, t [thumbsup] Meanwhile, I like 47 SOG and a 7-2 final tonight; this should put them in a better frame of mind heading into Columbus.

Torts is such a wanker no matter when he speaks...let's see if the Dubinsky/Jenner clown crew can maim a Penguin now...they are due....

Is there such a thing as 3rd man in when Johnson has Wilson pinned down in front of net and Foligno is throwing haymakers while he's down? Apparently not...such a dirtbag team...as we know.

Joining in at noon Friday morning from Chicago......guess I'm glad we were running around downtown Chicago last night (and eating the world's greatest deep dish pizza in a jam-packed litle place in town) while the Pens were getting shellacked in the last 2 periods.

On DK this morning, Josh Yohe really took Derrick Pouliot to the woodshed, largely blaming the ass kicking solely on him (though he also made it a point to call out Dumoulin). I obviously can't make any comment as to the double minor on Cole......which sounded like a game-changer......but Yohe claimed the official apologized to IC for having been forced to make the call.

But hey, Torts has his recipe for the Pens no matter the circumstances......right on (if not far over) the edge.....and he's never going to change. But just like the ass-kickings by the Craps and Wild, they have to eject that one from the memory back pretty quickly......and find it again on FEB 3 (next game against the CBJ).

I'm not a big fan of the staged fights but I think Oleksy had to go at it with the big bruiser Wood...egged him into it. Apparently the Devils watched the tape from last night and decided to play it tough tonight. Oleksy is handling himself reasonably well with his fists and not too bad on the backend...Nice to see Rhuwedel (sp?) with his first...salt it away lads!
