PENS 2021 Season!!

Have you guys looked at the schedule for the rest of FEB ?? With the two games vs Jersey this week postponed, six (6) of their next 11 games (beginning SAT 2/6) are versus the NYI.....2 at home and 4 on the road.

Fortunately, the Isles aren't playing very well.....after winning 3 of their first 4 to open the season, they've now lost 5 in a row, including back to back in OT versus the Cryers.......though I think most of us will argue the Pens aren't either.

I've not been spending as much time here as usual the past week or so......I know that's a good thing.......but I was wondering if anyone posted about the comments Geno made last week (not sure if it was to the DK site or the Athletic) about not being in top shape coming into the season, essentially due the impact of COVID limitations on his training regime ??

Botterill is reportedly out of the Pens GM derby (according to McKenzie); supposedly, Seattle either didn't give permission to interview him......which would surprise me personally.......or the Pens didn't receive the permission in a suitable timeframe. He joins Drury and Mellanby on the list of candidates who've either said NO or are, for whatever reason, in the no category.

I assume most of us are figuring this Chris MacFarland to be among the top current candidates right now (BTW, if you didn't know, and I didn't, he was with Columbus for 14 years prior to going to Denver back in 2015). There's little doubt in my mind he's among the better GM prospects on paper (probably with Drury and Mellanby) these days. He was said to have been in the conversation for the Devils job which eventually went to Fitzgerald.

Not that anyone cares what I think, the name I myself can't get out of my mind is this Matthew Darche; the current Director of Hockey Ops in Tampa. If the team likes Allvin but just can't see him (for whatever reason) as GM, perhaps those two could jointly replace JR. Not sure if he'd come in as a new DHO, or if he'd get the GM title but relinquish certain duties (like scouting) to Allvin.

Meanwhile, I'm still trying to figure out how legitimate a candidate.....not so much as a GM, but as an employee with the Penguins.......Hextall actually is. FInally, I'm wondering if I'm legitimately sorry that John Chayka isn't/can't be in the mix.

Hextall has/had a virtual interview today.

Kingerski is reporting this morning that another candidate for the GM position is Pittsburgh-native Dee Rizzo.......no, I've never heard of him either......who's with players' agency CAA. Apparently, aside his Pittsburgh connection, Rizzo is/was said to be a key member of the team that resulted in Sid and Geno joining CAA. The piece refers to him as the kind of guy with whom "everyone is an old friend".

There's no word if he's in line for an interview......but, said another way, he sounds to me like a poor-man's Pat Brisson (whose name has been bandied about, perhaps inaccurately, as a theoretical candidate).

From Rossi's piece in today's The Athletic (with contributions from LeBrun):
  • Pens are figured to (eventually) have first interviews with Chris MacFarland and Mark Hunter; former GMs Mike Gillis and John Ferguson Jr., and Kevin Weekes
  • Regardless what happens with the GM slot, looks like Allvin will stay with the team regardless (in his previous Assistant GM role)
  • This Dee Rizzo guy would evidently be pursuing a Hockey Ops job, rather than GM
  • Second interview candidates will be expected to their discuss their plans to retool around Sid and Geno, and "construct a modern Hockey Operations department"
  • Pens are thought to have been impressed with how the Rangers turned things around quick (but won't agree to the teardown), which explains their previous interest in Drury
  • Team evidently isn't convinced Chris MacFarland is "gettable", as the Avs may elevate Sakic (and CM would replace him as GM). CM is said to be the polar opposite of JR; hyper-analytical, thinks cap room is an asset, and believes in stockpiling talent......whereas JR was a total shoot-from-the-hip guy
  • Hextall, and his connection to Philadelphia, evidently is not viewed by the team as an issue, since he and Mario are pals dating back to the '87 Canada Cup.....plus Morehouse is said to respect the Flyers organization regarding their relations with corporate sponsors, and their connection to youth hockey (both key interests of Morehouse)
  • Nobody knows for sure if the Penguins have talked to Seattle or Jersey about Botterill or Fitzgerald; both are thought to be interested in the job, but neither is said to want any part of a lengthy review process. It's also thought that either guy would end up looking very bad if, given their past tenure with the team, they interviewed but weren't chosen.

Geno’s tank looks empty. His head has been clearly anywhere but near an arena.
Yup needs bags packed. But the idiot brass evidently wants him and Sid to retire as Pens. No thanks. Sid, YES, invaluable as mentor for the younger kids coming into the system. Geno is a malcontent , floating, spoiled brat at 30 someodd years old. G'Bye!

What is up with Sid? His stupid passes are getting more stupid. I have said for two years that you cant have 2 centers reckless with the puck. Malkin and Crosby both among the leaders in turnovers among NHL forwards. These cross ice passes in the offensive zone to the far point just dont work.

He is trying to do too much, yet again.... what would you do under same scenario? I am half joking and half serious with this....
The talent with him is not the same talent we saw a few years ago imo.
