WVU Release Joint statement from West Virginia University Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker & Head Men's Basketball Coach Josh Eilert

Joint statement from West Virginia University Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker & Head Men's Basketball Coach Josh Eilert

"On behalf of West Virginia University Intercollegiate Athletics, we believe the NCAA has made a grave mistake and misjudgment with regard to first denying RaeQuan Battle's request for a waiver and now in his eventual appeal. Both denials have produced nothing but hardship and penalty.

The intent of the transfer waiver process is to provide relief for extenuating and extraordinary circumstances that are outside the control of the student-athlete. There is no question that RaeQuan's case clearly calls for a waiver so that he can continue his academic and athletic career on a positive tract. Despite overwhelming evidence that RaeQuan clearly meets the established criteria for relief, the NCAA's decision to deny does nothing but penalize a student-athlete for negative situations and environments that others have caused him.

As our peer institutions have noted recently during this waiver process in their respective cases, we join them in being confused and saddened by the arbitrary process.

Dating back to at least 2013, RaeQuan has endured a vast amount of trauma in and around his life. It was published earlier this year that RaeQuan was the only Native American to play in the 2023 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. He is believed to be the first from the Tulalip Tribe to receive a Division I basketball scholarship.

Disappointed, disheartened and certainly frustrated are the emotions our entire basketball program is dealing with right now due to this short-sighted decision. It has already been requested by the Division I Board of Directors to review the existing transfer rules and waiver guidelines. Furthermore, the chair of the board was specifically quoted stating the NCAA would 'continue to view student-athlete well-being and mental health as a priority for the Association.' RaeQuan clearly meets the criteria, but once again the NCAA has failed to do the right thing for the well-being and mental health of the student-athlete. The right thing would improve the life of a young student-athlete and correct his path to academic and athletic success.

RaeQuan Battle should be playing basketball for West Virginia University while he continues to pursue a bachelor's degree at WVU, and we will continue to have his best interests in mind and fully support RaeQuan."

WVSPORTS.COM Josh Eilert postgame press conference summary

-- Eilert says the first thing that stuck out was 17 assists on the stat sheet where they shared the ball and passed.

-- Eilert credits coach Spiker for having a battle with WVU and a good game plan leading into the game and by coming in to compete with WVU. He says that Spiker most likely enjoyed being back in the Coliseum and coaching on that floor. He says it sure was special and emotional for him to be back in Morgantown and that he respects the fabulous job that he's done at Drexel.

-- He says the big message leading up to this game, to not lose the joy in the game and don’t second-guess themselves. He wanted his shooters let it fly.

-- He says that Akok Akok’s lift in the game was huge today, since he gave the whole team a lift on the defensive end and he had a +15 +/- with only five points. Eilert hopes he’ll have a big week in terms of conditioning so they can get his minutes up. He says that the three-pointer is a strength for Akok. He has no problem with him letting that shot go.

-- Eilert says Kerr Kriisa is an intelligent player and his IQ is really high but he knows the plays and he's been practicing. With Kriisa in the game, they'll have both him and Kobe Johnson to facilitate the offense so having another guy out there will be crucial for them. Eilert feels like adding Kriisa will be a healthy adjustment to their team and he feels like their production will increase with less minutes by adding a new person in the rotation. He says that Johnson has done a good job working on the fly and calling plays on the fly. He feels that Johnson has done an excellent job at point guard, so it'll be huge to have that luxury.

WVSPORTS.COM WVU men's basketball players postgame press conference

Center Jesse Edwards and guard Seth Wilson are up for postgame press conferences.

-- Wilson says when he can see the ball go through the net it can naturally raise confidence. It meant a lot to him and it was nice to get going for his team. Wilson said it was enegry in the second half that helped him make good basketball plays.

-- Edwards says the team played with energy played looser and faster, and Akok made some big energizing plays. Edwards said they got into a flow and it helped them get going. He says that Akok is a really good player and he's going to help with minutes and rest but also in terms of scoring.

-- Wilson said Akok is special and to be apart of watching him play is huge and playing alongside him is great. Wilson says having Kerr back will be huge for the backcourt. He said he's a magician and his presence on the floor is going to huge. Edwards said Akok is great at playing defense and timing blocked shots and impacting every shot he faced since he feels like Akok is similar to himself. Edwards says he can play more free and since they have more rotation and other bodies to back him up.

-- Edwards says they usually don't have guys that join midseason and can give such as boost but they do with Kriisa and Akok coming back to give them a huge boost. Edwards definitely feels like they'll get a chance to refresh and get some rest with a week-long break. They want to keep the momentum going. Wilson says everyone will benefit from having more people to play better in the second half and change the narrative.
