We are 3-1…..The Good and the Bad

The Good:

1) WVU is 3-1. This is the best possible record any reasonable fan could have imagined WVU having at this point.

2) The Defense. Allowed 13 points to the same team and QB who ran up 48 on them last year. Despite wearing down some in the 4th, the D shit TT down most of the game and got the game winning goal line stand.

3) Special Teams. FG kicking has been good, as has punting, kickoffs for the most part and we even had some punt return yardage. Noticeable improvement all around

4) Nicco as a gamer. He moves around well on his feet, extends plays and makes things happen. Plays with a great moxie.

5) Kole Taylor. Proving to be an outstanding portal get. Has been a vital part of an offense that has struggled this season. Been a great pass catching TE

6) Penalties. Once again we played a relatively clean game with minimal penalties. This has been improved all season.

The Bad:

1) WRs…..period…..just poor all around. Drops, poor route running, poor effort in some cases. The absolute weakest element of this team.

2) Nicco as a pocket passer. Wasn’t going through progressions well, stepped into pressure several times and had some just plain awful and weak passes.

3) Playmakers. We have had no big plays the past two weeks. We can’t stretch the field in the passing game and our RBs, although solid, aren’t breaking any big plays at all

5) Student section. Looked bad…..obviously, the weather was poor, but the student sections looked bad.

6) Offensive scheming. Just head scratching sometimes…..ridiculously conservative at times, and then throwing the ball all over when you want to grind the clock late. I also strangely feel that we aren’t getting g the best out of our RBs…

Just my observations. Thrilled to be 3-1 and hope this team continues to progress as the season goes on.

Strapped

It is the most WVU thing ever that one of our cornerbacks will be the first to get a penalty for making the "strapped* motion after defending a pass.

If you don't know what I am talking about that is OK. It is a big YouTube thing where WRs go head to head with DBs for 10k bucks.

Has brown convinced any to date that this start warrants bringing him back next year

we have caught a huge break scheduling wise this year and we have defeated 3 mediocre teams so this year
he tried his damnest to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory with his horrid play calling down the stretch
please reach out to,Brian hartline.
we desperately need a new energy in Morgantown and sadly Neal brown is not the man to bring it as he has
aptly Demonstrated the last 4 plus years

Marcis Floyd

I trashed this dude endlessly in the offseason and I’m glad I’m eating my words. He’s been monumental in his impact in the last two games. He’s covered well, and his safety blitzing yesterday was pivotal. Basically Every time they brought him he affected the QB. After watching the first two games, it’s clear he has a different gear than the other guys we had playing that spot. It’s been clear in the play of Aubrey Burks as well. The chemistry those two have back there together allows Burks to play more freely, and go make some stuff happen, because he doesn’t have to worry if Floyd knows what he’s doing. Idk man I’m just saying I’m pleasantly surprised.

What if college athletics were still pre-transfer portal and NIL rules. A fan’s dilemma post-rule changes.

Our team would look completely different if it were made up from our original recruits that left over the last 5 years.

I’m not making excuses but man this team in year 5 for Coach Brown would have looked very different.

As an old school fan who has followed WVU for almost 50 years, you used to be very excited when a young player would burst on the scene knowing you had 4 years to follow them. Now you have more reservations about it. I was excited to see the flashes of all of this year’s true and redshirt freshman over the last few weeks but then realize they may all be playing elsewhere next year if they are really successful and it’s all about the best NIL deal.

Oh well, enjoy it while they are all proving their value to us and others!

Beat the horny- toads!

Regarding the offensive philosophy

I know it isn’t sexy, but philosophically here is what we are asking our offense to do:

1. Control the clock. This inherently makes the games lower scoring. The opponent gets fewer possessions, we get fewer possessions. It also rests our defense, making them more effective when they are on the field. It’s also extremely frustrating for opposing teams like TT who want to go fast, make it a shoot out, etc. it doesn’t take a whole lot of digging in your noggin to remember the game this was done to us.

2. Capitalize on opponent miscues and red zone attempts. If they turn it over or you get a short field make sure you walk away with points.

3. Extend drives when the yards to the stick are 2 yards or less no matter the down.

4. Don’t make mistakes. If you have fewer possessions you can’t cough it up.

5. Power play will grind down a defenses front 7. It has made our tight end passes wayyyy more effective.

6. It’s not that our QBs are ineffective in the pass game, it’s that our receivers are dropping critical balls.
