MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (June 29, 2023) West Virginia second baseman JJ Wetherholt has been named to the 31-man Collegiate National Team roster that will represent Team USA in a pair of five-game series with Chinese Taipei and Japan from June 30-July 12 at various venues across the Carolinas.

The final squad was named after the completion of the 2023 Collegiate National Team Training Camp, a four-game intrasquad series played at the National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.

Wetherholt is the first Mountaineer to ever represent Team USA on the Collegiate National Team.

Over the past four intrasquad games at the team training camp, Wetherholt had a hit in three of the four games, including a two-run home run on Monday. He also added an RBI single in the opening game to give him three RBI for the week, the third-most among the players there.

This past season for the Mountaineers, Wetherholt led the NCAA with a .449 batting average this season, becoming the first Big 12 player since Ken Harvey of Nebraska in 1999 to lead the country, while also contributing with 16 home runs, 24 doubles, two triples, 60 RBI, 67 runs scored, and 36 stolen bases.

The Mars, Pennsylvania native also earned unanimous All-America status after being named to the first team by seven publications – ABCA, NCBWA, Perfect Game, College Baseball Foundation, Collegiate Baseball News, and D1Baseball.

The 20th USA vs. Chinese Taipei International Friendship Series is set for June 30-July 4, with games at the National Training Complex, the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis, and Segra Stadium in Fayetteville. The National Training Complex will host the opening three games of the 44th USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Championship Series July 7-9, while games four and five of the series will be played at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Ballpark in Charleston, South Carolina, on July 11 and 12.
