The Mountaineers opened the 2024 season at Stetson, splitting a four-game series with the Hatters. West Virginia took the opener thanks to a two-home run performance from sophomore Benjamin Lumsden. Stetson took the middle two contests on walk-offs before the Mountaineers won the final game, 7-5, in their final at-bat.

Junior Grant Hussey, junior Brodie Kresser and sophomore Logan Sauve each hit home runs over the weekend for the Mountaineers. Sophomore Ellis Garcia contributed with a pair of doubles and a team-high five RBI.

On the mound, Major struck out seven in his season debut to lead the squad. Graduate student Hambleton Oliver and sophomore Gavin Van Kempen each picked up victories for West Virginia against the Hatters.

The Mountaineers and 49ers are meeting on the diamond for the fourth series all-time between the two programs. Charlotte holds a slim 5-4 advantage with the most recent series coming in 2022 when the Mountaineers took two of three at Hayes Stadium.

Led by head coach Robert Woodard in his fifth season, the 49ers are 2-2 this season, dropping two of three to Virginia Tech to open the season before defeating Davidson in a midweek game.

The 49ers are in their first year in the AAC after winning the Conference USA Tournament in 2023 and advancing to the Clemson Regional final. Charlotte was picked to finish second in the AAC behind East Carolina.

Senior pitcher Cameron Hansen was named to the All-AAC Preseason Team. Carson Bayne is currently hitting .364 with two home runs through four games to lead the team.
