Pens -- FEB 2020

PHN reporting, per HCMS, that Geno is (or will be) making the trip to Toronto and "could be available to play" tomorrow night. Also, Guins have recalled Zach Troutman; Sully said they have a few D-men "nicked up" and ZT is likely being called up as their 7th defenseman.

Speaking of defensemen, Dumo evidently has begun skating the past couple days before practice......so perhaps his situation is beginning to brighten just a bit. I have to believe he's still 2 full weeks from returning to the lineup. Meanwhile, no new word on Tricky Nicky beyond the fact he's been skating outside practice.

perhaps they are slow playing bjugstad to trade him?

Who knows; while he's admittedly an established NHL center....,.which clearly has value in today's NHL.....how does that square with his current health and the fact he's played only 10 games this season ?? And that's before one takes into account his not-insignificant $4+ million/year contract......which has another year to go.

If he's not practicing, I can't figure out how anyone gauges his true current value.....either as potential trade bait, or as the Pens' #3 center.

lord knows they could use another healthy forward right now. sid had his surgery right around the same time.

What I'd like to know.....and not that it matters.....is how did Sid and Tricky's problems compare with one another.

I realize no two individuals have an identical ability to recover/rehabilitate, nor should the similar publicized description (core muscle surgery) of the two injuries necessarily imply they were the same. But under the basic assumption he's not a slug......and is indeed is as self-motivated to get back in the lineup as anyone else......it seems reasonable to consider that Tricky's hernia may have been far worse in severity than Sid's.

It's been kinda nice to get some Burgh perspective on local radio the last few days...I got Tyler Kennedy, The Old 29'er, Recchi, amongst the ones I occasionally hear Armstrong and Barnaby...we oughta do this more often. It beats hearing the usual Leaves drone day after day after myopic blue and white day....

Hey t, how long has it been since you last watched the Leaves in person at SBA....in the recent past ??

I listened to MM when I was in town last week.....clearly, he's a pretty serious hockey guy, and presumably spends more time talking about the Pens than even the Steelers. But while I definitely enjoyed hearing about my favorite team, his act just doesn't appeal to me that much.

agree. I turn him off at times as well. the guy knows his hockey though and that's what keeps me tuned in. He's been that way for decades. I went back and forth with him on air in the late 90s over having dmen that couldn't clear the front of the net.

also one of my teachers is a "recurring character" and tips me off to when he's going to call in. I always get a kick out of that.

That pass from Kahun to Geno alone to the left of Andersen......where he lost his balance and fell down......was the play where the Pens have been offsetting the opponents' score. The fact it DIDN'T convert has the look of a pretty big miss in this game, especially after the 5 on 3 goal.

Well...I can maybe fault him on the point blank second...he has to close that hole up. The other two nope. This team looks dreadful tonight. An equal and opposite to Tuesday in this 2nd....

Nylander is obviously a legit scorer, but I didn't like that 2-0 GA by Murray on a wide open shot. And now 3-0 on the Kapanen shot where I myself thought Murray looked almost totally mismatched.

I honestly wish I could figure out why I'm seemingly SO anxious to roll Murray under the bus.......

I'm never gonna blame the goalie no matter who it is on the breakaway, and I'm pretty certain you would likely feel same...not sure the percentage that way over the years...the 2-0 I wish he had it. Long and short is after watching the first, IMO he did what he could. We knew what was happening at that point...the Leaves were buzzing...

As for why you are anxious to roll him under the bus? My only answer would be he plays a style that isn't neccesarily pretty but is usually effective. Far different than the style of Jarry or the past Flower. This new latest and greatest (not sure bout that but whatever) 'high danger stat' has him excelling, so take that as you will...and also remember I have a bit of #30 apologist in my blood...I cannot help it. At least I'm honest....let's get one passed this shitsack Andersen at start of 3....

just one of those night it appears. 30 has been playing well but I’ve really become a Jarry fan until I’m not. I wish he had come back in net tonight. Not blaming 30. Just prefer Jarry right now
And I dont blame ya...I think we have a good problem that way. My feel is the other, but that is why Chocolate or Vanilla. The main problem to my eyes is the lack of drive out of our guys. We knew they would come like a buzzsaw...and in 2 there? Geez we looked dreadful

Fair enough......I also have absolutely no issue with your being a "bit of a #30 apologist". We all have guys like that; in fact, I'm already on record (just the other day, specifically) about being that way myself with Horndog.

I guess think the thing about Murray for me.....and this is hardly a new (nor perceptive) assessment......is that when things are going best for him, he just somehow finds a way to look HUGE in the crease and lets the puck hit him. And when things are going not so well, he seems (to my eyes) to retreat toward toward the goal line and starts flopping around.

Guess I just feel as though we've seen more ot the latter 30..... though the former guy surely has been around recently (like, in their last game versus the Craps). Meanwhile, PHN showed the high danger map for last night's game, and it was pretty embarrassing for the Guins, both defensively and (especially) offensively.

For myself it is the occasional soft one that squeaks in between body and post somehow with him. But ya you're right, you can tell when he is on or off based on body position. Last night was one he needed to steal and didnt. I thought in the first there might have been a chance at that till the 2nd marker. He was out on the shooter and Kapanen put it in the only hole that was available. If he makes that stop (a pretty tough one), maybe that rallies the troops a bit.
I know one thing...there is a reason I come here to chat...all of us are I feel fair and knowledgeable. Rifling through some of the actual Pens boards last night was an abomination. I learned (apparently) that Sid is garbage, Murray is a complete sieve and our role players don't measure up...it's that inane nonsense from some that makes my head hurt. What a spoiled fanbase it is at times...

PHN and DK both reporting Kahun incurred an LBI blocking a shot last night.....I'd turned the game off by then.....but said HCMS is calling him day-to-day (which I guess is more positive than might have been expected immediately afterward). Guess he'd therefore be considered possible for tomorrow vs the Sabres.....though I'm not sure he wouldn't be better advised to sit a day to see if he's in better shape for the Craps game on Sunday.

PHN is also reporting the Pens are thought to be taking a sniff at Wayne Simmonds......

While I appreciate Simmonds game in the past, he has lost more than just a step and thus really doesn't fit our brand of hockey imo...I like the fact he's a tough SOB and likes to go to the dirty areas, however it's taken an obvious toll on his body. DON'T DO THIS GMJR. Somebody without the hard mileage please.

Re: Kahun that's great news. Cause he looked in considerable pain last night...

Been hearing how well Eichel had been playing this year, but I was honestly shocked to see on today's AT&T pregame that his stats coming into today are 33/42/75; 9th in the League. Pretty impressive playing for a team like the Sabres down in the standings; though with a $10 million cap hit, he damned well BETTER be answering the bell every night.

Speaking of the Sabres, our ol' buddy Conor Sheary will be a UFA after this season coming out of his 3/9 deal signed with the Guins. Will be interested to see if he gets any sniff from his old team in the off-season.

Well, 3GA in the first 11 minutes against Jarry......the first when the Pens defense was caught puck watching behind its own goal, the second by Reinhart off a Letang turnover, and the third by Eichel on the PP off a Malkin stick call.

Looks like Game #1 of the season all over again......thus far, at least.

Would like to think the Guins have been caught looking forward to tomorrow.......speaking of the Craps, down 2-1 to Jersey heading into the 3rd.

McCann is ICE cold.....misses the net cleanly from 25 feet right up the slot. I know these shooters are trying to pick corners, but just SO many go wide these days that I sometimes can't see how they wouldn't be better off just firing away.

And now, 4-1........and 8 just scores his 700th to tie things up at NJ.

Welp...it's over now not that it wasn't after one. Terrible performance. Careless all around...the 38 shots thusfar don't really tell the story imo. Buffalo played smarter.
Better wake the F up for tomorrow...3 losses in a row after such a good stretch ain't a good look
