The only real losses for West Virginia, and they're big ones, are Tykee Smith and Dreshun Miller. The Mountaineers fill two major needs with Nester on the offensive line and Dixon at linebacker. From a numbers perspective, it looks bad. However, once you break it all down, WVU is actually adding to their roster rather than subtracting.
This would be like Poolers 6th season? So if not for the pandemic he would have been gone already.

Holgs couldn't even eke out a bowl win when he had this so called super talent against the weakest P5 teams that couldn't beat G5 schools. (2-5 in bowls) Hell he can't even beat G5 schools now coaching at Houston and destroyed a team ready for a top 10 finish with a Heisman candidate QB.

Rutgers 9-4 (who doesn't beat them)
Cincinnati 10-3 (QB was injured and squeaked out a win)

USF 5-7
Clemson 10-4 (this Clemson team lost 4 of their final 6 games. Big win yes but it's not like they came in as the best team ever)
That year to tie for the conference but still earn the right for the Orange Bowl they needed to win their final 3 because they lost to Syracuse and UL. Needed Cincinnati to finish their final 2 games as wins so they would have tie breaker. Really needed UL to lose one of final 2 and they did losing to Pitt plus they lost to UC giving WVU the tie breaker. They needed Rutgers to lose to UCONN and they did.
The loss by UL was the real clincher. So basically he backed into the Orange Bowl going against a good Clemson team that struggled down the stretch but ACC is weak so it helped keep them in first.
After that first year with Stewart's team and the following year with Stewart's team.
Year 1 backed into BCS
Year 2 Failure with 7-6 record of the same team that score 70 on Clemson. Year 3 total embarrassment.
Good coach for the time we needed but no experience and ran a poor program from administration stand point. He never got over the hump with his own players.
Brown just now starting to get his own players and in 3 more years counting this one coming you will know exactly what they have.

During Holgorsen’s time at West Virginia, the average recruiting class ranked sixth in the Big 12 and 41st overall in the nation. That seems bad at first glance, but West Virginia’s densely populated state and distance from other Big 12 schools should be considered. 6th in the Big 12 and 41st in the nation is very commendable.
Taking over a program with no real experience is difficult to begin with, but Holgorsen is not a great leader of people which makes it even more challenging. At best, he’s a mad scientist type, a loner, an introvert in an extrovert’s position and role. He does things his own way because he simply can’t do it the way others do it. Not wearing blue and gold, a slap in the face to West Virginia fans, was worn as a badge of honor for Holgorsen. He wasn’t one of us and never wanted to be. He wanted to coach football and not do any of the other bullshit media obligations, interactions with fans, or anything else other than Xs and Os. The fans and administration overlooked all of this because of the excitement surrounding his explosive offense and the fresh start that he represented. He is much better-suited as an assistant coach and really had no business being hired as a Head Coach by West Virginia in 2011.
Bowl Games Holgorsen’s teams finished 2-5 overall. His only big bowl game win was his first season when WVU routed Clemson 70-33 in the Orange Bowl. The other was a 43-42 win against Arizona State in the Cactus Bowl. That Orange Bowl win was huge but the rest of his bowl games were a real disappointment.
Holgorsen’s overall record was 61-41 (.598 win percentage). Although he managed to have a few outstanding seasons (10-3 in both 2011 and 2016), his time at WVU was largely disappointing and extremely average overall.

Neal Brown was widely seen as one of the best young coaches in the nation while at Troy. Coming off three consecutive bowl game wins and a 31-8 overall regular season record in the past three seasons, West Virginia was extremely lucky that Brown was still available when Holgorsen left for Houston.
Coach Brown has a flawless record with past players and administrators, as well as with current WVU players and administration. His leadership and ability to teach and work with young people is his strong point. He kept the entire incoming recruiting class his first year and has brought huge excitement back to the program.
Brown has impressed current in-state recruits and appears to be well on his way to landing big-time West Virginia high school players, particularly in 2021.

There’s no reason to not believe that he can’t win at West Virginia.
West Virginia is the No. 4 team in the Big 12, which is what they want to see. But the Mountaineers also are only No. 37 nationally in the 2021 recruiting rankings, which offers room for improvement. But still is the average for WVU all time.

WVU 2020 recruiting ranking 40th and 4th in Big 12
