After watching the first three quarters of the Texas Tech-Kansas game on my DVR recording (at my age, I’m going to sleep now):
This is my opinion. Most of you know I was a sportswriter for 15 years who was paid to analyze these things. Take it with a grain of salt. Feel free to come back after WVU plays Tech and rip on me if I’m wrong. I just thought you might want to know what to look for on Saturday.
I think WVU will take Tech. I wouldn’t bet on it because I learned at a young age never to bet on college football. Too unpredictable. I just cheer on my alma mater.
Let’s bring on the Mountaineers!

- Tech’s Mahomes will be VERY difficult to stop. On most pass plays he had a quick choice of the right flat, over the middle, deep and scramble, and he’s a big QB who’s hard to bring down when he scrambles. That’s why he ran for 3 TDs. He also gets rid of the ball quickly if necessary, hitting the receivers, even when he’s on the run or dodging tacklers. It’s a rare quality. Tough to defend. And one reason why Tech only punted TWICE in the entire game.
- Tech’s kickoff coverage is very undisciplined, which could set up Shelton Gibson for going to the house. Kansas State averaged 30.2 yards PER RETURN.
- Skyler should have a field day with his passing game and scrambling runs (NOT on designed QB keepers).
- Tech’s defense is ripe for Crawford to pick up a LOT of yardage, moreso than Shell. Quick moves on the run will fare better against Tech’s defense than trying to ramrod ahead.
- Tech is a fairly undisciplined team, as reflected in most of its penalties being 15-yarders. Those can be quite damaging at the wrong time.
- Tech is about as good a 3rd-down team as I’ve seen in college football today. 9 for 9 before halftime.
