WV teacher strke

Let’s, get one thing correct, the WVEA is NOT an actual union. WV teachers don’t have a union like PA.

Everyone wants Darnell Wright to stay in-state and attend WVU, but they can’t be bothered to ensure that those educating him don’t leave the state for a fair wage.

The road to a better tomorrow in WV is through our state’s education system.
Define ‘fair wage’?

They work more than 9 months a year as teachers?

Add up the countless unpaid hours, and they work just as much as someone working 12 months per year. Also, a lot of counties in the state go through the first week in June and start back around the middle of the month in August.

School days are going to be added on to the end of the school year is my understanding. So the kids are not losing instructional days.

That's a fair point, but even teachers will tell you class time is much less effective during the end of the year. I hope that isn't true. Regardless, causing parents to shell out a hole bunch of money against their will and possibly ability to pay can be considered harm even if the kids get the exact same education later on.

That 5% is in addition to the yearly step increases they get.
Yes, they do get that their first twenty years. But then it's over. How many work longer than twenty? How many with more than twenty are there now? I don't have any idea on any of those, but I bet it's a high percentage.

I've wondered for a long time, why do they give the yearly step increases for only twenty years? Seems to me a person that has the long tern experience of twenty or more is pretty darned valuable. More than a ten year vet.

Did you know they stopped giving a new hire the assurance of health insurance after they are eligible for retirement? They will have to shop around for that after they retire. Stopped that just before I retired in 2009. They might be better off.

That’s just not true.

You keep stating teachers are the only people who take work home..and that’s absolutely moronic.

Using your logic I must work 15 or 16 months a year. Reads like dumb logic...right?

So how many unpaid hours is it? Is it more than any other salaried worker...who works 12 months out a year? Doubtful.

My cousins have the same type of degree that teachers in WV possess, but we’re born, raised, and work in PA. Why is there such a disparity in pay that they all will reach over $90,000 at the top of the pay scale within 30 years and will teach a large portion of their careers at or over the highest teaching salary in WV that is only attained after 35 years of service. I realize salaries in all industries vary from state to state nationally, but is $93,000 vs. $55,000 for the same job fair? That’s not to mention teachers in most districts in PA aren’t faced with a lot of the issues that those in WV face.

Why is this an argument and what does it have to do with anything? Teaching is a difficult, exhausting job and an exceedingly important one. Teachers in WV are vastly underpaid compared to the rest of the country. And no I am not a teacher.

People endorsing a raise for teachers keep bringing it up...so ask them.

Edit: ...and educating children really isn’t difficult but babysitting while attempting to do it is a diff story...

They have not gotten a raise in 4 years

Why don’t you start another pity party post because you yet again got tossed from another message board and then whine to Vernon to let you stay. You might take work home, but you either get paid OT or are already getting paid market value. The only time teachers bring up taking work home is when uninformed individuals state they only work 9 months/year.

What is the budget of Pennsylvania compared to WV?

I can't believe that people are depreciating the value of trusted individuals who educate and care for our children 35 hours a week. I love our teachers and appreciate them.
For those uninformed they may reduce paychecks by 25% to receive paychecks throughout the Summer.

You just described the situation of most employed people in WV. Particularly Southern WV. It’s a super tough economy. I’m very blessed at the moment but if things change for the business I work for I’ll be forced to leave as well.

I’m good with finding money for a raise. Teacher recruitment and detainment should be a top priority, but it’s time we get something in return.

Why don’t we try some charter schools. Create a merit based compensation system that encourages Innovation and competition.
I mentioned to my sister teacher -who later became a high school principal - that not all teachers are equal and that they should get raised based on merit. The exceptional high school physics teacher should get paid more than the junior high art teacher who comes to school high all the time. But my sister said "No! All teaches should be paid the same!"

So what’s the salary per pupil breakdown because I don’t think just lookin at annual salaries is the best measure.

Wow. Just write you feel like I beat you like a rented mule.

And yes I now expect a harshly worded email from the SPCA.

The teachers in her kids schools in PA make twice what WV teachers make. Not even sure why she is commenting on this subject

Yes teaching is the only difficult and exhausting job that works more than 40 hours per week and takes work home.

....because the teachers in PA that make twice as much are still pumping out uneducated kids.

The math isn’t difficult from there.

Edit: ..but, because it’s necessary, I’ll do it for any WV teacher reading this thread

Some might say they haven’t earned a raise in four years.

You think people should get raises ‘just because’ ?

Stick to issues that concern you, like Trumps tariff increasing the cost of your bud light habit

The trajectory of insurance costs going up is pretty steady going back to at least 1999. Health care costs are a big problem but they aren’t a Republican/Democrat issue.
Wasn't Obamacare the brain child of a democrat; or maybe it's just the stupidity of the American voter.

No light beer. ...no concerns regarding tariffs either.

Instead of pretending I know what’s what as a teacher I did what’s what and my bank account is good to go for my retirement.

Thx for caring.

Might be hard to see at the moment...but I’m on the side of ‘real’ educators. It’s a dirty business though.

Nobody said it was. Not sure why there is such anger on this. They’re teachers for goodness sakes. Pay them a decent wage. Education is everything.

O.K, teachers work 9 months + 3 months worth of grading papers and other stuff. I work 16 months per year.

You clearly deserve a 5% raise for that post alone.

Now get back to watching kids text during study hall.

How hard you work - which I’m sure is very hard - is irrelevant to this equation. It’s not a contest. These teachers deserve to be paid better.

Get education out of government and maybe they could get paid more and students could receive a better education. Win win.
