GAME THREAD West Virginia basketball at Oklahoma State

Making shots from the charity stripe will remain an issue for WVU

71.2% from charity stripe. Quit getting Wague 50% and Bell 56% at the line. They are 44 out of 82 at the line for 53.6% together. Must find a way to get your top players at the line. That means driving to the basket while under control.

Rest of the team 154-192 for 80.2%

You can see who needs to get to the line. Teams with depth are just going to foul Wague and Bell so they don't score. Don't run your offense through them let them rebound and get put backs. Need to move and pass the ball not to the bench but to players on your team in the game.

Stevenson, Mitchell and Matthews must stay in the game and stay out of foul trouble especially Stevenson. These 3 are the main ingredient to wins. Especially Stevenson the hot head.

WVU has 166 turnovers for 12.8 a game average. If they had played at their average TO they win the game over KSU even with poor foul shooting.

Stevenson, Mitchell, Toussaint, Kedrian, Bell have 118 of those 166 turnovers. That's 9 TO a game. That has to stop.

Turnovers
Stevenson 26
Mitchell 28
Toussaint 22
Kedrian 23
Bell 19

Clean up the mess and it will be OK. All of these guys go way to fast and don't slow things down. Fast is good if you play under control.

I find it amazing that year after year we seem to shoot so poorly from the foul line??? They are referred to as Free Throws. As a comparison, relevant or not, a Single "A" high school in Wheeling shot 14 for 24 from the three-point line in their last game??? That's fairly close, to what we shot at KSU from the foul line. I have always believed that free throw shooting is underappreciated and the reason that just about every close game lost is lost by missed opportunities from the line. Huggs says the have to make 100 foul shots before they leave practice. If it takes them 200+ shots to do so, how does that help?

You're looking at 2 players and blaming the entire team.

A ONE-TIME PROBLEM. WVU IS 71.2% FROM CHARITY LINE THIS SEASON. NOT EXACTLY SHAMEFUL. STOP OVER-REACTING TO ONE GAME, EVEN ONE AS TERRIBLE AS THE KANSAS STATE GAME. LONG SEASON STILL AHEAD.

Wait, did the poster who put WVU in the National Title hunt just a week or so ago just accuse another poster of overreacting? LMAO!

Wague and Bell at the foul line is not a one time problem.
I AGREE. WAGUE AND BELL ARE THE FREE THROW SHOOTING PROBLEM. THE REST OF THE TEAM SHOOTS 71.2% OR BETTER.

Every WVU opponents’ coach looks at WVU’s stat sheet and knows who to foul:

Jimmy Bell, 28 of 50. Whack him the whole game!

Mohamed Wague, 16 of 32. Whack him. No FG, only half of free throw points.

That’s what Kansas State did, and other Big 12 teams will do, too. Bell and Wague shot 6 of 18 from the line. Rest of team was 14 for 20, matching team season average of 71.2%.

The problem is NOT WVU team's free throw shooting. It is Bell and Wague's free throw shooting.

This means Bell and Wague have to benched late in the game when WVU’s opponent has to foul to come from behind. Wague has the added problem of not controlling his emotions over refs’ calls.

Watch tonight's Oklahoma State game see how the Cowboys whack Bell and Wague every time they get the ball. They're just playing the percentages, as will every Big 12 game for the rest of the season. Huggins can't afford to leave in players who are so terrible with free throw shooting. And Bell and Wague are the ONLY terrible free throw shooters on the team. They are an anchor around WVU's neck unless miraculously they learn how to make free throws IN THE GAME!!!

All those posting that Wague should get MORE playing time: Well, still feel that way when he's at the free throw line! Bell has assets in rebounding and defending in the lane. Wague is too irrational for his own good at refs' calls. His teammates try to pull him away and calm him down all the time.

Calling a young man irrational is over the top dude.

Turnovers. That will be the reason we could go 5-13 in this league. Not saying we will, but we could. At the release of the schedule, I thought the best chances to steal two road wins in league was K-State and OK State. Not looking good.

It’s easy to spot the Huggins-coached team. It’s the one that refuses to/can’t run an offense, doesn’t keep the ball moving, can’t score in transition, has low-post players with no offensive moves, struggles to make 2 consecutive free throws, can’t pass and gives up straight-line drives to the rim. Been this way since late in his time at Cincinnati.

Same crap, different year.

It’s like the defenders have magnets stuck to them and Keddy and Joe just want to dribble it straight into them and turn it over every time up the floor instead of, you know, distributing the ball.

We just aren't very good. It showed against Stony Brook, but I was hoping the lack of Matthews was wrong with that game. It wasn't.

Matthews had 2 fouls in first 5 minutes. Hasn't been seen since. Games not over neither is the season.

Here’s hoping they’re having a season changing halftime discussion. Otherwise, it may be over before we even had a chance to get to know them.

At least we'll always have being with single digits of Purdue at some point in a game like CFE says. These "strangers" are not likely do much more than upset a team here and there.

Why was Stevenson in the game with 4 fouls with more than 6 minutes left? It wasn’t like we were down 10 points. Geez, that’s just dumb coaching.

That technical foul should get a ref fired. Was it Higgins or one of the other ones that called it?
