PENS 2021 Season!!

Paul Steigerwald was on Boomer Gordon's NHLN show this afternoon, and said something on which I was totally unaware.......that not only was JR not in Pittsburgh (or Boston) yesterday, he'd been spending the entire pandemic at home in North Carolina. Not only didn't I know that about yesterday, I didn't realize he never moved to Pittsburgh. Perhaps that's common knowledge for locals (or better fans than yours truly), but I myself was shocked at to hear it.

Steigy made a comment he admitted was just a theory; as the so-called "hired gun" when brought in as Ray Shero's replacement (for a team with the basic framework already in place), he could see the Jerks bringing him back to play that same role for a young team currently thinking seriously about a Cup run.

Also, sounds like his current choice for JR's replacement would be Ron Hextall; likes his background as a talent/franchise builder (which the team will obviously need sooner rather than later), and feels he'll bring in more sandpaper than the team has currently (or has had in the past).

Hextall? fvck off. not you personally @COOL MAN

Oh no way....uh uh...just NO FREAKIN WAY will any of us stand for a Philthy F'n Cryer in the front office .....will we!?! Especially not that hatchet wielding asshat....

This PP is what happens when you have NOBODY to push with force / command position in front of net...all perimeter bullshit. So easy to defend. Is Reardon in charge of this now or they are simply reverting to days of Recchi???

I have this hack homer NESN crew on my feed again tonight btw.... nothing quite like an overtly pro Boston crew, colour guy (whomever the hell he is) completing the ear bleed with SHITTY accent...I seriously need to get on dialing in the local radio

Mark Madden also had on Rob Rossi from The Athletic and he stated 2 favorites may be Hextall and Rangers assistant general manager Chris Drury, but doubted the Rangers would give permission to speak to him.

No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn’t expect much with all the defensemen out but the lack of effort up front is incredibly pathetic. Sure looks like Sully will be gone soon. The team quit on him last year.

On Monday he was on watch....today however, well....lol....
In all seriousness this guy is their buddy now, I've got a few pals who have actually golfed with him over the last few years. A true 'hockey coach', close to the vest but willing to goof off with the best of em, without divulging anything.... I think he is done sooner than later, as we see the message is lost on them. He was the refresher when needed , the players loved his attitude. That is now the problem sadly....

Back to this....its blasphemy if he arrives on our doorstep. I'm gone, no joke if that happens....wake me up the day he is fired. Otherwise the team is DEAD to me. I won't watch. No freakin way. No Philthy gonna run our team....not that I'm gonna watch.

I would just look at it as I trust mario but dam would this dude take it as soon as things go south.

perhaps he can chase mark madden around...

We should have forfeited our 2020 1st round pick and kept this year pick.

I said it last year but nobody wanted to hear it. I would have done full rebuild. Trade Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Guentzel, Zucker, etc. The Penguins would Stock up on draft picks and prospects. Time for a rebuild. It was great run but window is closed. Crosby deserves to finish his career competing for Cups. Trade him to Colorado to play with his friend Nate for 2 1st round picks and a guy like Kadri. Then flip Kadri for more picks.

Time to accept things for what they are, take our lumps, and start competing for Cups again ASAP instead of being mediocre for years and having middle of 1st round draft picks. Be like Detroit, they’ve been shit for long time.
Anyone else hopping on full rebuild with me? Going to be hilarious when Minnesota finally wins their 1st ever lottery this year with our pick. I’d fire Sully first and bring in someone else just for a spark remainder of season. If the spark doesn’t happen, full rebuild starts immediately after the season concludes. I’ll give them 1 final chance with new coach first but if things don’t change, the rebuild officially begins this Summer

Didn't see anything from last night's game.....all I can say is that I myself expect anytime the Pens play in Boston is that they'll get outworked, and the Broons will get better goialtending (and that's regardless who's in the Pens goal).

Meanwhile, this talk about the problems between Morehouse and JR got me to wondering if Mario might have gotten an "it's Morehouse or me" ultimatum from JR. If so....and from a distance......I'd have expected JR to win that battle; that is, assuming ownership was committed to him.

Now, it may not have come down this way......as it may not be the style of an old-timer like JR.......but I find it hard to believe he'd just throw down the keys to the executive washroom without trying to leverage the situation. Besides, it'd be light years easier for the team to pubiically manage a Morehouse resignation.

OTOH, Morehouse was a part of franchise Leadership long before JR arrived......and as a Pittsburgher, is likely closer personally to Mario (and almost certainly to Ron Burkle, because of their joint political leanings).

Given the pandemic (and the resulting strain on Team finances), I don't think you have to worry about Sully......in Year #1 of his 4 year extension.......getting fired anytime soon.

Then the Cup window is officially closed and not trading guys for draft capital is a Cardinal sin. What is Pittsburgh’s obsession or fetish with keeping coaches/managers much longer than their shelf life? Tomlin should have been fired few years ago, Hurdle’s firing was a year or 2 late, and now Sullivan who should been fired after Montreal series

I know some teams are too quick to fire coaches and that is a bad thing but so is keeping a coach longer after his voice expires

Interesting tidbits from Rossi's piece in today's The Athletic:
  • First interview will be with Allvin
  • Current "Top-Tier" candidates are thought to be Chris Drury (Rangers AGM), John Ferguson Jr (Bruins Dir PP), Hextall (Kings Advisor), Chris MacFarland (Avs AGM), and Scott Mellanby (Habs AGM)
  • Candidates outside this Top Tier are thought to be Jason Botterill, Peter Chiarelli, and Matthew Darche (Bolts Dir Hockey Ops). Supposedly, Mario and Burkle are impressed with the Lightning organization, and consider Owner Jeff Vinik to be their closest ally among their League counterparts.
  • A Team source supposedly said that Tom Fitzgerald would be the new GM "by Monday" if he was currently available
  • A League source has supposedly said if the Pens are still looking in April.....and Fitzgerald hasn't re-upped with the NJD by then.....he''s the perfect candidate
  • They don't expect the NYR to permit Drury to interview; they didn't interview Ferguson while they were in Boston this week
  • Both Hextall and Mellanby (an old Lemieux pal) have been given permission to interview
  • Morehouse will lead the interview process (and make a recommendation), but Mario will be involved
  • Team opinions on Botterill are said to be mixed; was considered a good assistant, but was thought to lack leadership intangibles in the past. No one knows if the Buffalo experience will help or hurt that viewpoint.
  • Team supposedly wants a guy who'll "prioritize retooling around Sid and Geno", and "possibly" Letang
  • Team evidently wants Geno to re-sign after next season
  • Ownership wants Sid and Geno to retire as Penguins (as do they), but they're supposedly "watching how this plays out"
A couple more; after Craig Patrick was canned by Ken Sawyer, the finalists as his replacement were Ray Shero and Chiarelli. And after Shero was canned by Morehouse, the finalists as his replacement were JR, Julian Brisbois, and Pierre McGuire.

MacFarland, Botterill, Drury and Mellanby would be my top choices and in that order... John Ferguson Jr???? Good grief man, that freakin scares me to death. Look him up CM if you don't know of his 'accomplishments' already...
As for re signing Geno.... ya I get the lovey dovey shit, but cmon already. This guy is declining at a faster pace that Sid imo, looks uninterested out there constantly, and shouldn't be handled with such kid gloves. This country club nonsense is getting old real fast here.... thanks for everything Geno, Sid is the franchise guy ahead of you by a country mile, so g'bye....

I have been tired of the country club since the flyers debacle almost a decade ago.

I’m open to Hextall being the GM, for the entertainment and drama it’d bring. Not like we are realistically winning Cup any time soon so brining some entertainment would be next great thing. Imagine him building up a team and taking Penguins to another Stanley Cup. Flyer fans would be as mad as a woman getting blood in her eye. 😂

I hear ya it would be entertaining, but that's a hard no for me. I despise that asshat....

What are some of your fave shows/ recommended of late btw, haven't checked in with you there for awhile...
We finally watched Black Sails, really liked that show, also now towards the end of The Mandalorian. Just started it a few days ago, which is borderline criminal for a big Star Wars fan. I am quite impressed with it too.
Going to season 5 of Vikings next, which is a fave....
