The Athletic on Daniels: A can’t-miss quarterback prospect’s last chance

FWIW:

Daniels’ third stop, West Virginia, included a reunion with Harrell, his offensive coordinator at USC.

Although Harrell knew Daniels well, head coach Neal Brown didn’t. Despite Daniels’ transfers, Brown entered the relationship with an open mind.

“We have more guys in our building doing extra recovery or watching film on their own,” Brown says now. “I think JT has a lot to do with that because he set an example while he was here. … He went out of his way to get to know the guys.”

Daniels won the starting job and, coincidentally, began his 2022 season facing the quarterback who supplanted him at USC: Slovis, who had transferred to Pitt. The Mountaineers lost that game in excruciating fashion on a catchable pass that bounced the wrong way and was returned for a 56-yard touchdown, followed by a fourth-and-22 pass by Daniels that was ruled incomplete at the Pitt one with less than a minute remaining.

Undeterred, Daniels threw for 365 yards and three touchdowns the next time out, but West Virginia dropped to 0-2 by losing to Kansas. On the heels of a 3-3 start in which the team averaged 39 points per game, the Mountaineers lost three straight as Daniels threw a combined four touchdowns and five interceptions.

Harrell, now the offensive coordinator at Purdue, attributed Daniels’ eventual benching more to scheme change than poor play.

“I don’t think it was anything to do with JT,” he says. “JT played at a really high level until we started changing on him and asking the quarterback to do things that weren’t his skill set.”

Both Brown and Harrell say Daniels handled the change well. Brown called it “a very mature” conversation. “Our experience, other than not winning enough games, was extremely positive,” Brown says.

With the offense moving away from his strengths and Harrell departing, Daniels entered the portal one last time.

Five Thoughts: #7 Penn St. 38 WVU 15 & dipsy-doo dunkaroo circus tricks....

My Fiver on WVU's loss to Penn State Saturday night in Happy Valley...

1. 4th & 2 & that's our call? I saw Keno post after the game that we averaged 5.2 ypc on rushing attempts (not factoring in sack yardage). If it is 4th and 2, and you are in a must-convert situation early in the 4th quarter, it's not time for dipsy-doo dunkaroo circus clown tricks. A trick is what a whore does for money. For God's sake, give our best guys a chance - CJ up the gut would've been just fine by me, or perhaps a zone read look with an RPO. But, this is becoming a "thing" with Neal Brown - you know he had this scripted. If we are in a critical 4th down, we're running this play that worked in the Spring Game for a touchdown pass to Garrett Greene. You have to be able to feel how a game is going, get away from the script and create. When #8 in white ran onto the field, a row of us in gold recognized it, and I noticed that Penn State's entire defense began spazzing out, waving their arms - they saw it. They had our Spring game tape. They absolutely knew what was coming. It is probably one of the worst play calls I've ever seen by a WVU coach.

2. Hats off to Lee Kpogba and our run "D". Neither Singleton nor Allen had longer runs than Garrett Greene or CJ Donaldson. I would venture to say that we are not going to face a better OL or RBs this season - we'll see. And, we did not give up any back breaker like we did vs. TCU or K-State last season, and we didn't give up a ton of yards like we did to Eric Gray from Oklahoma in '22 (210 yards). While the two PSU RBs did combine for 121 yards on 23 carries at 5.26 ypc, we made them earn it. Tray Lathan looks like a solid option at LB, and Anthony Wilson showed that he is not afraid to come downhill and hit RBs near the line of scrimmage. If we give a similar effort vs. Pitt and force them to try to beat us through the air, I'm not sure Pitt has the firepower, but...

3. My goodness our secondary just looked lost out there. Open WRs running free way too often, and we just let Drew Allar play pitch & catch like it was warmups. Allar goes 21/29 for 325 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT. I thought we did a decent job bringing pressure, but it resulted in only the one sack by Tomiwa Durojaye. This problem scares me because it looks fundamental. Meaning>> I don't know if you can fix this in one or two weeks. It looks like we're just sagging off players by design, and that at times, our safeties and corners are confused. It was bad - 2018 bad. 2006 bad. Maybe even 2012 bad, but again, it's one game, so we'll see.

4. Garrett Greene. On the positive side, Greene had PSU defenders frustrated at times, as they had perfect coverage, perfect contain, and he would break free and outrun their pursuit for a nice gain. However, Greene has to be able to move the ball and move the chains by throwing over a stacked box, and he did not prove he could do that. Early on, at 7-7 in the second quarter, Devin Carter had broken free and was at least 3 steps in front of the PSU corner for a touchdown on a 3rd down, and Greene's throw was nowhere near him. It was like airballing a free throw. Later, on a 3rd & 6, Traylon Ray had at least a step on a PSU defender on a crossing pattern about 10 yards down field, and Greene threw the ball 4 yards behind him. Ray was visibly frustrated. They're going to see these plays on tape -- they were there. Say what you will about Neal Brown's play-calling, but these plays were there and Will Grier, Geno Smith or Marc Bulger would've torched Penn State on them. Greene simply didn't make the plays. He can't just be a skittering waterbug for WVU to win 7+ games this season. He is going to need to make defenses pay down the field, much like Skyler Howard did to Shelton Gibson and Ka'Raun White during the 10-3 2016 season.

5. 0-1. For a while Saturday, the game was breaking the way we had hoped - we were hanging in there, and after forcing a three & out to start the 2nd half, we had the ball and the chance to tie it up at 14 a piece, before a huge illegal procedure penalty wiped out a 26-yard run by Justin Johnson. So, after James Franklin ensures that the Nittany Lions cover the spread by the TD with 6 seconds left, we fall 38-15. However, we have 11 games in front of us. We're going to beat Duquesne Saturday, and my feeling is that we're going to beat them handily. Then, we have the Backyard Brawl and Texas Tech. If we go 0-2 in those two games, I don't see how Neal Brown survives this. If we go 1-1 in those two games, then we're 2-2 on the season, and we'll see where it goes from there. If we go 2-0 in those two games, then we're 3-1 on the year heading to TCU with a win over Pitt, a win finally over Texas Tech and our only loss a road defeat at a top 10 Penn State squad. At that point, we would have some momentum and we'll see where this thing goes.

WVU Release WVU Men's Soccer: Mountaineers Vault onto National Stage

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Sept. 6, 2023) With a 4-0 start to the 2023 campaign, the West Virginia University men’s soccer team has begun to garner national recognition, coming in at No. 16 in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll.

Additionally, senior Yutaro Tsukada earned a spot on the College Soccer News Team of the Week while junior Carlos Hernando was named to the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week.

In two games last week against Bucknell and Yale, Tsukada collected six points, tallying a goal and an assist in each contest. His penalty kick against the Bulldogs proved to be the game-winner.

Hernando is the only Mountaineer field player to play every minute this season through four games. Against Bucknell and Yale, his strong defensive play from his center back position contributed to two shutouts and just one shot on goal in two matches.

Sophomore Marcus Caldeira also has been on a tear to begin the season as he is tied for the NCAA lead with five goals, having scored in all four matches thus far.

The Mountaineers enter the rankings for the first time since Sept. 6, 2022, when they were slotted at No. 23.

The next two opponents for West Virginia feature a pair of top-10 teams as No. 3 Portland comes to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET, before the Mountaineers head to Orlando to take on No. 6 UCF and open Sun Belt play on Friday, Sept. 15.

For more information on the Mountaineers, follow @WVUMensSoccer on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

PSU penalties (or lack thereof)

I don't think it had an impact on the game (although that first TD I think the entire line was holding) but are you telling me they played so clean that they only had 1 penalty the entire game?! Only 2 other teams had 1 penalty in their first game last week. The average was 6 for all 130 teams. Last year PSU averaged a little over 5 penalties per game - almost 6 per game in their August/September games. Even the best (least penalized) team last year averaged almost 4 penalties per game.

"Lahaina’s wildfire risk was well known. Maui County’s hazard mitigation plan, last updated in 2020, identified Lahaina and other West Maui communities as having frequent wildfires and a large number of buildings at risk of wildfire damage."

But no warning given.
No evacuation plan in place.
A failure of government.

This is gonna sound as a suck up post but...

Please hear me out. I see so many posts saying the staff is not recruiting well. I am not a star gazer type, so I can not see where you all are actually wrong. I do kknow we recruited and lost kids that would have been pretty signigant improvements over where we at minimm were last year defensively. So to put this all on NB(Bean for the rest of you) is a bit off as @Vernon has stated our #'s for fb nil is not signifigant. With that said, it is his responsibility to win...anyway...maybe a little different perspective. Just to clear things up yes I want to win this year so of he/eam win 8 ot more with a bowl game included, I am not as sure as some to get rid of him, but without that...Im pretty firm in the camp of, in the words of Ray Charles,(Hit the Road Jack!)

BARR LIED! FOIA Requests Reveal There Were No DOJ Investigations on Election Fraud After 2020 Election as Bill Barr Claims

Just another PLANTED deepstater who wrecked the Trump presidency...

Bill Barr sent out a memo on November 9, 2020, saying there should be investigations of the elections.

Jeff Clark told Steve Bannon the FOIA requests have come back from every district but one with NO DOCUMENTS.

No investigations were done as a result of that memo. There is only one of the 12 districts that has not yet come in and that’s the eastern district of Pennsylvania.

The US Attorney of the Eastern District asked to investigate issues in his district. Barr denied the request!

Bill Barr lied to the American public. Now he got caught.
