Buy outs are a gimmick that were brought into existence, by agents, to give an illusion of security.
A buy out is nothing more than a dividend on a coach, for agent. Think about it, if Neal was a perpetual 10 win guy, would $10MM stop a Blue Blood from getting him? The answer is, no. Similarly, is Neal worth another $10MM to WVU to get him out of the program? The answer is again, No!
Then, ask yourself this, would Neal have turned down an offer for $4MM per year if there was no buyout in his contract? If you tell me yes, I suggest the coach didn’t have the confidence he would succeed.
At the end of the day, we should not include buyout language in any contract. It’s nothing more than a dividend for an agent if the coach fails. Until WVU is considered a blue blood, there is no point in a buy out.
This is miserable.
