WVSPORTS.COM Guard Kobe Johnson press conference summary

-- When he first came to WVU he didn't have a lot of experience, but he had a big summer working on his jump shot and his game. He thinks he's better everywhere on the offensive side of ball. Johnson said he found out at the same time as the public and now as the starting point guard and he's got to take that one and be the next man up as a leader.

-- The defense needs to be stay out of foul trouble and work on that this season with not a lot of depth. It's not new for him stepping up into his leadership role. Johnson said he's been working for this increased role.

-- It's been rough with a lot of things going on and they've been staying together and Eilert has lead them through that. Seth Wilson and Johnson are close and he loves it here. He says WVU and Morgantown needed him and others to stay here. Having a relationship with Wilson helps him on the court.

-- Johnson understands that he has to be more now and hopefully as time passes without Kerr Kriisa he'll need to get better. He's trying to have a great mindset and be a good teammate.

-- Johnson says this offense is great with space and the guards working with Jesse Edwards and great shooters. It hasn't been difficult to pick up. Johnson says that this summer he had something click for him that worked out for him.

-- There's been multiple times in his career when he's dealt with tough stuff but he wants to focus on pushing through that with teammates.

In Bridgeport, Connecticut, State Judge William Clark has thrown out the results of the September Democrat primary election and ordered a new primary to be scheduled and conducted [Court Order Here]. The issue was ballot harvesting and ballot fraud – both violations of state law.

The Judge reviewed CCTV footage showing Wanda Geter-Pataky, vice chair of the Bridgeport Democratic Town Committee and operations specialist for the city, and Eneida Martinez, a former City Council member, working to support the party approved candidate. Both Ms Geter-Pataky and Ms Martinez participated in absentee ballot fraud, ballot harvesting and ballot stuffing at drop boxes. Both women invoked the Fifth Amendment when confronted as witnesses by the judge.

Judge Clark ruled on Wednesday to overturn the city’s Democratic primary election, initially won by incumbent Mayor Joe Ganim, following claims of absentee ballot fraud by his opponent, John Gomes.

After two weeks of evidentiary hearings for Gomes’s absentee ballot fraud lawsuit, Judge Clark ordered a new Democratic primary based on 180 pieces of evidence presented by Gomes’s legal counsel.

In the 37-page ruling, Clark said the video footage presented by Bill Bloss – Gomes’s attorney – was particularly alarming.

“Mr. Ganim was also correct to be ‘shocked’ at what he saw on the video clips in evidence that were shown to him while he was on the witness stand,” Clark wrote. “The videos are shocking to the court and should be shocking to all the parties.

Ganin was one the many city officials called to the Fairfield Judicial District Superior Courthouse for questioning, along with Wanda Geter-Pataky, vice chair of the Bridgeport Democratic Town Committee and operations specialist for the city, and Eneida Martinez, a former City Council member accused by Gomes of stuffing ballot dropboxes.

At the witness stand, Ganim told the court he was “shocked” by an 18-minute video – subpoenaed by Gomes from Bridgeport police – that appeared to show 12 instances of Geter-Pataky either depositing stacks of ballots herself or handing ballots to others from behind her reception desk, and four instances of Martinez dropping off ballots.

🔥🔥BREAKING🔥🔥 Statement on Kerr Kriisa

"In late August 2023, West Virginia University learned of a potential eligibility concern for men's basketball transfer student-athlete Kerr Kriisa, who admitted to receiving impermissible benefits while enrolled at the University of Arizona. West Virginia worked cooperatively with the NCAA Student-Athlete Reinstatement Staff to reach an appropriate resolution. As a result of his actions, Kriisa will miss nine (9) 2023-2024 regular season games as part of his eligibility reinstatement. Kriisa will be able to continue to practice and travel with the team during his suspension from competition. He accepts responsibility for his actions at Arizona and looks forward to joining his Mountaineer teammates on the floor."

WVSPORTS.COM Assistant coach Da'Sean Butler press conference summary

-- Coaching in college is not too different, he was around young players coaching in professional sports. It's all the same on building relationships and managing relationships and players.

-- Every team has their adversity to Butler, and how they handle it is more importantly on how they band together as a team. Butler says Eilert has seen the adversity and he's confident if that's the guy leading them. Butler says he's a poised guy and that Eilert trusts the staff and the players and he's been transparent to everyone.

-- The offense and some of the actions are things Butler has seen and most of the stuff is what Eilert wanted and needed. The playbook was fun to put together with Eilert and the players that they focus on and want to get the ball too. Having that trust in Eilert to work together was important to Butler. He says the whole coaching staff has different point of views and they all work together and put their experiences together. A lot of the offense is things he's seen and recognized and Butler has played alongside some really good coaches. They take things that they feel will work and implement them. They realize that this year is important and any more information is better.

-- Butler's message to fans is to remain supportive and consistent and that they're not victims. Bad things happen and they want to move forward, they want to take it one game at a time.

-- Butler says the most difficult part of transitioning from coach to play is relating and articulating a message to the players. You continue to build relationships and manage personalities each day and he continues to learn. Butler needs to articulate it properly to the players and figure out the things that motivate them and it's a tool that he can use that to push them to be the best they can be.

-- To Butler, Ofri Naveh is a hard worker and he was excited about what he can in the United States and at WVU. Once he watched him play and saw him in person, it was a no-brainer. He just needs reps now and Butler was never worried about his work ethic. They are people he trusts overseas that are important to finding these players. Butler says he's one of the team's better athletes so his dunk didn't surprise him but his ability to navigate traffic being undersized was impressive.

-- Butler said he just likes good basketball and he couldn't turn down a great opportunity to be back home at WVU and work with Eilert since he's known him since he was 19 years old. Butler says he tells recruits and younger athletes everything he wishes he heard. Butler is a representation of people of the state of West Virginia and the misconceptions people have about the state and he can show the bright spots about coming here. Butler reassures recruits on the trail about what the University and West Virginia can bring to the kids.

-- Eilert is poised and under control at all times and that's a special quality. Butler says he does a great job staying calm, cool and collected as a great leader in the room. Players respond to him and the guys came to his defense as head coach because he's someone they trust. He's more teaching than 'barking' but he can flip that switch if needed.

-- Coaching was always in the back of Butler's mind and he watched coaching clinics as a kid. Butler was hooked as a coach after his time as a graduate assistant at WVU and he knew that was what he wanted to do after his injury.

-- Teaching is the most important things and players only respect what you know and not what you did as a player. It was a great experience to learn from a lot of coaches and watch a lot of basketball. As a video coordinator, the coaches are teaching everyone.

-- Anything can happen in a game and it's next man up for the big men on the team and there's lots of opportunities, especially if they get in early foul trouble and it will be challenging.

WVSPORTS.COM Josh Eilert press conference summary

-- Josh started with a homage to the late coach Bob Knight. He admired his coaching philosophy on discipline. Wants to send condolences to his family,

-- They're on practice 28 and they're excited, it's here. He said they might be short handed but they've got guys they can count on and go to bat with. He said he feels the support and that the fans are buying in and West Virginia operates with chip on their shoulder. He says the team has its challenges. They are not victims, they have opportunity and they'll step up and take advantage. They're excited with the 'Mountaineer Nation' backing them.

-- MIssouri State is a good opponent, 17 wins last year and they have some good pieces. They do some disruptive things defensively. Not a lot of film on them but they have film on WVU and Eilert will have to look back at last year. During the George Mason game, he said they did some good things but faced some adversity. Eilert said the team showed a lot of 'resolve' with things not going their way and lots of different variables. Eilert says the guys came together to win the game.

-- Akok Akok is being monitored daily by medical staff and they'll work with him every day to figure out what the next step is. He doesn't have any updates as of right now but he's in high spirits. He didn't get a clear picture of what happened to Akok and the tests are still being looked at.

-- Eilert says they are as low as they can get with bad luck but the adversity creates an opportunity. It looks like everything is against them but maybe the tides will change. Today, Eilert wants to focus on preparation for Monday. His opportunity is to lead the players and put them in the best situation. Eilert says that he could hang his ehqd everyday but that would be no good, there are people dealing with a lot worse things than what he's dealt with on the court. He wants to control what he can control.

-- Quinn Slazinski and Kobe Johnson will be slotting into the starting lineup for Monday's game to replace Akok and Kriisa. Eilert is excited about Kobe Johnson. Seth Wilson can help at point guard as well and they've simulated some of that in practice.

-- Eilert knows they'll have to be more conservative with a lack of depth due to potential foul trouble and some officiating rules changes.

-- WVU will certainly consider going into zone defense and they simulate it in practice. He wouldn't hesitate if he had to. In an exhibition game you don't want to show your cards but you need to win. It's an advantage for Missouri State to see what WVU did vs. George Mason. The defense needs to continue to grow and get stops and they were only able to get two to three stops.

-- Eilert is confident in Kobe Johnson and he'll take less calculated risks. He doesn't expect Johnson to have the ball in his hand as much as Kriisa. Eilert says Kobe's length as a defender and his skill there is a step up. It's a give and take but more importantly with a lack of depth. It could be a more efficient practice with 10-11 people practicing and that hasn't been a problem.

-- Johnson's confidence levels are way higher than last year and Eilert has always believed in Johnson since they keep on grinding and showing up every day.

-- From Jesse Edwards, Eilert didn't want to force the issue and wanted to make it more natural. He would like to see him be more aggressive on rebounds and he left some out there. It put some pressure on the team's defensive rebounding, so everyone has to rebound and finish possessions. Coaching is all about playing to your personnel but they're figuring out a new rotation.

-- Eilert isn't worried about Arizona's statement but his message is that they're not victims and they're going to own what happened. EIlert tells Kriisa to own his mistakes and he can do a lot of good by mentoring others and leading. The team is not hanging their head and they're ready to move forward regardless. Kriisa's issue is not something that happened on WVU's watch but they're dealing with the aftermath now.
