WVSPORTS.COM West Virginia head coach Darian DeVries press conference summary

--West Virginia head coach Darian DeVries said he liked the energy and good ball movement. You can sometimes see some crazy stuff but they played within themselves. Defensively they had a lot of on the ball toughness and were connected. He was pleased with the effort and plenty of things that were positive. The biggest negative was the second half defensively with them getting into the paint and the offensive rebounding they have to do a better job boxing out and being more physical.

--DeVries said they did what they needed to do from a physicality standpoint against a 7-footer but there were some holes as well. They've been able to survive by being more athletic and now they don't have that luxury and they need to get bodies on people.

--Ofri Naveh is a great kid and works hard so the moment he hit the three was good for him.

--DeVries felt that his team handled the moment well and especially the freshmen did some nice things.

--DeVries said they might double up the box out drills they've been doing. They were able to stay in the gaps a bunch. A good team defense needs to be a connected defense but they try to pick their spots to be aggressive.

--Javon Small is terrific and a great floor leader, he can score and get in the paint.

--Guys did a nice job and moved it well and shared it well. Defensive rebounding and turnovers are the two things they will talk about.

--The timing of passing and throwing strikes putting it where it's supposed to go and throwing guys open is key. You want to play aggressive and not be scared to turn the ball over but being able to do that and not turn the ball over is key.

--DeVries said collectively as a group his players have a good feel for the game and good IQ and they play to those strengths. They've done a great job this summer and fall of learning how to play with each other.

--Rebounding is a mentality to go hit people and get the ball. He doesn't care how he gets it done just make sure it ends up in his team's hands.

--Jonathan Powell has had a great fall his mindset has been good and eager to learn. KJ Tenner has been a little hampered with some injuries but both of them for true freshmen handled themselves well.

--DeVries doesn't tell anybody in recruiting they are coming in and starting. They are up front and honest but you have to come in and earn it. Javon Small is a really good player and he is excited to see how much he can improve.

--Next one will see a very similar type of opponent from a physicality and rebounding standpoint in their next opponent in the secret scrimmage and it will tell them a lot about where they are.

SIAP: What’s the status on Yates?

Is his hand healed? We can’t afford another disaster at center. Hopefully Livingston has been getting a lot of work this week. It’s mind boggling that Yates was our best (apparently only) option last week. How bad could Livingston be? If he isn’t better than Yates last week, then we don’t have any depth at center. The K State NG will be all over Yates. Definitely a matchup to watch on Saturday.

K-State vs WVU strength and weaknesses ........

The key to beating K-State tomorrow night is stopping their QB Avery Johnson from running, whether it's designed runs or QB taking off when protection breaks down. That's something our Defense has not been able to do very well.

KSU is also very well balanced run vs pass, but is very good at passing. Historically, when Neal plays a good QB that can move the chains we usually can't get off the field.

But if KSU has a weakness, I think it's in the passing defense. Teams have been able to throw vs them. Tulane threw for 342 yards. Colorado 388. Ok-State 364. Can we throw against them? They are good at run D, so we'll have to mix it up.

If this is a shootout I think we lose. But I'm hoping GG has a great night and gets 300+ passing, 80+ rushing and at least makes this an entertaining game if we do lose.

WVSPORTS.COM First half thoughts

--Fun brand of basketball to watch all around. West Virginia has a lot of options and spaces the floor on offense with a system that lets the players play free. In the first half, the Mountaineers were 18-34 from the field (53-percent), 7-7 from the line (100-percent) and 7-16 from three (44-percent). The Mountaineers were at 1.471 points per possession. That'll do. This team has a lot of versatility and almost everybody out there can shoot the three. Perhaps more impressively, West Virginia had just three turnovers themselves.

--They're finished at the rim! West Virginia was 9-10 on dunks and layups in the first half.

--The Mountaineers forced 11 turnovers and turned that into 19 points. Also held Charleston to 34-percent shooting and gave up just 5 second chance points. They're active defensively.

--Tucker DeVries was the best player on the floor in my opinion. He isn't an explosive athlete, but is smart and positions himself well and is very skilled. He had 9 points on 3-7 shooting with 3 assists and just one turnover.

--Javon Small is good at basketball, but we already knew that. His finish on that layup in traffic along with his pass to Hansberry for a dunk stood out to me. He had 11 points on 4-7 shooting in the first half and a 3-1 assist to turnover ratio. That's what you want out of a point guard.

--Really like the look of freshman Jonathan Powell. He is long and athletic and can really shoot the basketball as well. Paid particularly close attention to him in warmups and he was throwing down some impressive dunks with his 6-foot-6 frame and has already shown the ability to knock down shots. He's going to play a role for this team.

--Toby Okani and Sencire Harris really get after you defensively. Going to be fun to watch them.

--Size is an issue but Amani Hansberry plays hard and Eduardo Andre has the makings of a fan favorite with the effort he gives at the five. Hansberry had 7 points and was 3-4 from the field including a three, while Andre had 3 points and 3 rebounds. Both ran the floor well.

I was just blown away by a friend I played golf with today who is in the Ram

Club. He is usually pretty connected on the UNC front. We were talking about UNC and he confirmed Brown has volunteered to retire a couple times this season….somwe were talking about he replacement.

I have still heard several people in the UNC department want Satterfield….i expected J.Chadwell to be his insider talking point….but he said he is hearing a bunch of chatter about Jeff Saturday coming back to be the HC. I just said “Wow” and thought no way they do that. I know he is an alum, and he interumed for the colts last year….but no way they do that

Right?
