MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 26, 2024) – The West Virginia University baseball team returned home on Tuesday and came away with a 6-2 victory over Akron at Wagener Field at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers improve to 15-10 while the Zips fall to 5-18.
Five different Mountaineers had at least two base knocks on the night as WVU tallied 13 hits. Senior Reed Chumley scored two runs and drove in another while freshman Aaron Jamison had an RBI and stole two bases, including a straight steal of home.
After enduring an hour-plus rain delay, the first two innings remained scoreless before Akron hit a two-run home run in the third to take the lead.
In the home half of the third, the Mountaineers responded with four runs go out in front. Chumley delivered an RBI single before sophomore Ellis Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to tie up the game. Jamison then tripled home junior Grant Hussey to put WVU on top and then proceeded to steal home, the first straight steal of home since Landon Wallace was successful against Appalachian State last year.
The Mountaineers added a couple of insurance runs in the eighth on an RBI double from junior Kyle West and a sacrifice fly from Hussey.
Sophomore Gavin Van Kempen got his fifth win of the season, striking out two in 3.0 innings while allowing the two runs. Sophomore Carson Estridge followed with two strikeouts in 2.0 scoreless innings before freshman Joseph Fredericks went for 1.2 scoreless innings. Sophomore Maxx Yehl struck out three in an inning of work while graduate student Hambleton Oliver tossed the final 1.1 innings to earn his second save.
West Virginia will be back at Kendrick Family Ballpark this weekend for a series with Oklahoma State. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:30 p.m.
