MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 20, 2024) – The West Virginia University baseball team had a bounce-back game, Wednesday afternoon against Marshall, resoundingly defeating the Thundering Herd, 15-0. The Mountaineers improve to 12-9 while Marshall falls to 6-14.
West Virginia hit five home runs in the game, the first time hitting a quintet of homers since doing so at Kansas in 2022. Senior Reed Chumley hit two as part of a 3-for-4 day while junior Kyle West, sophomore Sam White and freshman Aaron Jamison each left the yard as well.
On the mound, sophomore Gavin Van Kempen picked up his fourth win of the year with 3.0 scoreless innings while striking out four. Sophomore Carson Estridge, senior Hayden Cooper, freshman Joseph Fredericks, freshman Chase Meyer and sophomore Maxx Yehl each had a scoreless outing in relief to secure WVU’s third shutout of the season.
The scoring got started in the first inning for the Mountaineers on an RBI double from junior Grant Hussey before West hit a three-run home run. Chumley made it back-to-back homers to give WVU a 5-0 lead after one frame.
The Mountaineers added six runs in the third on a double from Chumley, a wild pitch and a pair of two-run home runs from Jamison and White.
Chumley hit his second home run of the day and fourth of the year in the fourth inning to tie him with Hussey and White for the most on the team.
In the fifth, freshman Spencer Barnett made it 13-0 with an RBI single before West collected his fourth and fifth RBI of the day with a two-run single.
The Mountaineers will hit the road this weekend for a three-game series at Oklahoma. First pitch on Friday is set for 8 p.m. ET and will air nationally on FS1.
