Morgantown, W.Va. (March 25, 2023) – Junior Danny Berlitz of the West Virginia University men’s swimming and diving team closed his 2023 season at the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday, March 25, at the Jean K Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

On day one of competition, Berlitz set a new program record in the 200 IM prelims, finishing with a time of 1:44.50 to place 42nd.

Berlitz represented the Mountaineers in the 400 IM on day two finishing in 19th, touching the pads in 3:42.53, just shy of breaking the school record.

To close competition at the 2023 championships, Berlitz added a personal best in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 37th with a time of 1:55.70, securing the second fastest time in program history.

“Great week for Danny and our program. I’m very happy for and proud of Danny for his week here at NCAAs,” said coach Vic Riggs.

“As I have mentioned before, Danny probably had one of the hardest paths back to competing at the men’s NCAA Championships. To not only come back but to compete the way he did says a lot about who he is. To set a program record in the 200IM, have his highest placing ever at this meet in the 400IM and finish with a lifetime best time by a second in the 200 breaststroke is great all the while improving his placing in every event. Though he missed a 2nd swim in the 400IM his 19th place is among the top finishes at NCAAs for our program,” he continued.

With Berlitz’s swims this week, the men’s and women’s swimming teams concluded the 2022-23 season with seven team records, 48 all-time top ten times and 73 lifetime best times.
