The 1922 WVU team played TWO teams with losing records! If you remove the 10 losses to WVU the Mountaineers’ opponents had a 47-26-4 record! That’s a 64.4% winning percentage!

Coach Clarence “Doc” Spears’ team SHUT OUT 7 of its 11 opponents. Even if you’re playing Little Sisters of the Poor that’s pretty impressive.

WVU outscored its opponents, 267 to 34! So the Mountaineers get no credit for being impressive on offense and defense even if they’re playing Little Sisters of the Poor?

But the 1922 WVU team played TWO teams with losing records! If you remove the 10 losses to WVU the Mountaineers’ opponents had a 47-26-4 record! That’s a 64.4% winning percentage!

Pitt, for example, under Coach Pop Warner, a legend, was 8-2, held FIVE opponents scoreless and outscored its opposition, 190-43, but lost 9-6 to WVU.

West Virginia Wesleyan was 8-2.

Gonzaga was 5-3 and outscored its opponents, 215-79.

Washington and Lee was 5-3-1 but beat North Carolina State, 14-0; tied WVU, 12-12; and beat Emory & Henry, 85-0, to open its season.

Ohio University was 5-3

Rutgers was 5-4, had its best season in 3 years.

Marshall was 5-4.

Virginia was 4-4-1.

Indiana was 1-4-2.

Cincinnati was 1-7-1.

Wikipedia’s extensive discussion of the 1922 season, which anyone can post without expertise, went through games played week after week without mentioning WVU.

The only mention came under “Bowl Games” and saying that West Virginia beat Gonzaga , 21-13, in the San Diego East-West Christmas Classic “to finish the season undefeated with a 10-0-1 record.”

The team with the MOST victories in 1922 got an afterthought mention in discussing the 1922 series.

That is elitism at its worse.

But WVU fans who downplay the 1922 team being the only undefeated team in Mountaineer history commit an even worse sin. They are turning on their own . . . and without the numbers to back them up.

Any chance at getting Spears to sign the 1922 helmet, and add it to the auction?
