WVSPORTS.COM Josh Eilert postgame press conference summary

-- Eilert knew this team [Bellarmine] would present a challenge since they've seen so many different styles of play across the last three games. It was a challenge to prepare for. With their current situation, he says he can feel the fatigue and it's a challenge they have to deal with. When you play a team like that, you're fatigued and your offense doesn't have that spark. Knights' head coach Scott Davenport for Bellarmine had them prepared well and ran up and down the floor. He said they were hungry and took it to WVU. It's up to them to learn from it and grow, but a win is a win.

-- He said it was a quick turn with a Thursday break and practice on Friday. He said they need to have a consistent approach to gain more efficiency. He's needs to mindful of who's playing and how to be more efficient with them.

-- Eilert says Ofri Naveh wasn't perfect but he hit a big shot down the stretch and it was as critical as any shot in the game. They need to take efficient and controlled shots and they can tell that they didn't take good shots by their offensive rebounding numbers. Naveh really likes it here. They have some guys with some diverse backgrounds and situations here at West Virginia but him and RaeQuan Battle have a lot on their mind. In the locker room, he says they're close regardless.

-- He said he waits out and feels for when he needs to take timeouts in the game with a short bench, but he needs to think strategically with how he uses them throughout the game. He feels the pace of the game and there are a lot of variables that go that and he thinks about it.

-- Eilert thinks Josiah Harris is taking good threes and they're going to fall. He isn't sure what switch flipped at game time but he told them that they need them to make shots and get out of their own head. He has full faith in Harris and thinks he has a breakout game coming soon. He would like to see more fall. His biggest gripe with Harris is that he'll take it to the rim and not finish strong or with confidence.

-- Eilert said Battle relies on hope and it's a no-brainer for him to get eligibility. He says that he deserves to play basketball and be with his team, and if he loses hope and optimism but it's hard to tell where he would go in his mental health. He says they need him on their team and in their locker room.

-- Making shots takes a lot of pressure off Jesse Edwards and they'll throw as many bodies as they can at the guys down low. They need to have a balanced attack and they probably need to utilize Kobe Johnson more. He needs to figure out how to get more production from guys around Jesse Edwards.

-- Eilert says he put a lot of thought into how he eases Battle and Kriisa into the practice schedule and that they stay engaged. He doesn't expect an issue for them to move into the rotation but they haven't been running with the starters. It's important to make sure the guys they have no gel together with what they have available.

Here’s the reality…

All you people calling for Brown’s job after this win bring up how we were favored and nearly squandered it.

And that’s valid, except none of you expected us to be at 7 wins going into tonight in the first place. So how can you be mad about him winning a game you didn’t anticipate him winning when the season started?

So does he suck as a coach because he almost lost, or is he not so bad considering most had us pegged at 4 wins max and dead last in the conference?

You don’t get to have it both ways. I wanted him gone before the season started, but here we are at 8 wins and going to a halfway decent bowl.

He’s earned another year at least.

WVSPORTS.COM Observations: West Virginia basketball vs. Bellarmine

–West Virginia won this basketball game, let’s get that out of the way first but you definitely didn't walk away with a ton of confidence as the Mountaineers had to hold on for a 62-58 win with some plays late to really seal things up. This is a team that is out-manned by basically anybody they play right now in terms of depth and Bellarmine did a good job exploiting that and making the Mountaineers defend and cutting them up with some nice passes. Truthfully, that's a veteran Bellarmine team but things are going to have to be better moving forward against a difficult schedule that lies ahead. It's only three more games until the return of Kerr Kriisa but the Mountaineers need others to step up.

--Jesse Edwards finished with 17 points, 14 rebounds and 2 assists but it's fair to say he could have played even better. He's receiving a lot of attention right now every time he touches the ball but needs to be able to make the right decisions and get the ball to shooters. He is being asked to carry a lot right now, but he has to be stronger with the ball despite all of that attention because 5 turnovers isn't going to get it done. Still, he's by far the best and most skilled player on the floor for the Mountaineers and it really isn't close.

--Quinn Slazinski has been the second best this year and plays a smart brand of basketball for the most part. Sometimes he has to step outside what seems like his comfort zone and take on a bigger role given what has unfolded but he has made some significant plays this year where the offense has needed it. Today wasn't even his best effort as he finished finished here with 16 points on 6-13 shooting with 5 rebounds and 3 assists but -10 overall. Still, West Virginia needs his production.

--It's much better offensively for this team when Kobe Johnson is able to not only score the basketball but hunt for those opportunities. He made some big baskets at times when nobody else was in this one and finished with 13 points on 5-10 from the floor.

--To help Edwards, somebody needs to step in and make some shots. Outside freshman Ofri Naveh who was 2-3 from deep and had arguably the biggest shot in the game with a late three, the rest of the team combined was 1-12. That is a problem especially because teams are collapsing on Edwards and shooters have gotten open looks. They need to confidently step in and hit them or things are going to be even more difficult.

--Josiah Harris is one of those as he is 0-10 from the field over the past two games. Still, even without scoring he is able to produce in other areas with 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks but he has gotten some great looks and can't find the bottom of the net. Another in that department has been Seth Wilson as he is just 15-54 from the field this season. That's 27-percent from a guy that you need to have put the ball in the basket.

--West Virginia was at .954 points per possession. That isn't going to get it done. Neither is the fact that despite a size advantage the Mountaineers had just 7 offensive rebounds on 30 misses. Some of that is boiled down to shot selection and not playing within the offense, but some of it is simply fatigue.

–On the plus side the Mountaineers were 17-21 from the line. That obviously played a major role in this one given how close the final score was in the end. This team did struggle to finish around the rim going 12-24 even on some that weren't really all that contested.

--Of the 62 total points, only six came from the bench. The sixth, seventh and eighth player right now just hasn't been able to give much.

--Things are about to get a lot more difficult with St. John's coming to town Friday. This is another good test at home with the record now back to 3-3. Still, West Virginia needs to find a way to win one of these games and this will be a golden shot.

Time to say it

I would be looking at QBs in the portal and from high school. I've been told conflicting info on what will happen with Nicco and regardless of what he may tell you today you need to be prepared for him to bolt if given the chance.

Unrelated to WVU's QB situation, Utah just lost one of their quarterbacks.

Tabulated Results From Blue Lot Pre-Season Predictions + Public Awards for Predictions

So I have combed through the pre-season prediction thread posted by @DvlDog4WVU and tabulated how frequently each prediction came out. Here is what we were thinking:

12-0: 2 Posters
11-1: 1 Poster
10-2: 1 Poster
9-3: 4 Posters
8-4: 14 Posters
7-5: 18 Posters
6-6: 16 Posters

Statistically we (The Blue Lot) predicted 6.4 wins on the season based on this weighted model. Thus the season exceeded Blue Lot Expectations.

There were some other outcomes in there as well mostly involving Brown being fired or the apocalypse canceling the season after 4 games.
