Interesting read about conferences, teams and TV

"I'm going to speak the truth to folks in this tweet for why the TV networks want/need/getting consolidation of the biggest football brands coming together.

For those that watched or listened to the conversation I did a couple of weeks ago, most of this will be rehashed. But it is important for people to understand things.

People say things such as "it will kill the sport," "I will not watch," "it is the end of college football," and a bunch of other stuff.

You want to know what will kill the sport? Not being able to watch it without paying a boat load of money to a streaming log-in that the vast majority of Americans will not pay for.

88 TV million homes still have access FOX, CBS and NBC - be it through antennas, broadband only through YouTubeTV, or the bundle cable.

In order for ESPN, CBS, NBC, and FOX to survive (ABC is already going to get sold), they need a reason to get people to pay for whatever method is available for revenue - be it through YouTubeTV, cable bill, etc. To accomplish this, they can't be showing G5 vs P5 games or P5 vs FCS games. That is the cold hard truth. Survival for the TV networks do not care if you get mad or think it is the end of the sport if the networks are putting together more P5 vs P5 games against the biggest brands. The data supports all of this 100%.

OTA (NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX) still account for the overwhelming majority of sports viewership. They can't have an Apple coming in and taking an entire sport away from their airwaves or an entire conference, etc.

The networks ditch parts of what they don't want to streamers. The rest of the MUST HAVE as it is coined by network executives, they are pushing hard to consolidate those together in order to survive the changing environment.

Football fans overwhelming watch P5 vs P5 games.

Oregon vs Portland State? Nobody cares. The data proves it. Oregon vs Michigan? Oregon vs Penn State? People want to watch that.

Now that FOX has the 4 biggest football brands in the western part of the country, to go with the Big Ten 14 members, they now are after Florida State and Clemson (if they can get them that is).

The top 27 most watched college football programs on OTA since 2016 are the following:

ALA LSU OSU AUB UGA MICH TA&M FLA TENN PSU WIS IOWA UK CLEM MISS TEX FSU LOU MIAMI PUR MSU MSST OKLA ND NEB VT OR

Those schools get the ratings by playing other P5 programs, not a schedule loaded with FCS or G5 schools.

The TV networks want P5 vs P5. Again, not P5 vs G5, not P5 vs FCS. The networks, during this changing environment, can't survive if there are a lot of P5 vs G5 and P5 vs FCS games.

That is why you may have seen it mentioned elsewhere that the Big Ten is wanting to start the season in Week 0 with CONFERENCE games and not all non-conference games. It's what the networks want and need.

The last big football brands are going to be consolidated into the Big Ten and SEC. That is the truth and the sooner you realize it, the easier it will be for you to accept what is already happening and what is to come."
