Brian Newberry VS Drew Chronic

My initial thoughts between hiring the BN, Drew C package deal VS just Drew C and his own staff.

The package deal sets up for a major issue a few years later IMO

MY biggest FEAR on the package deal:

Lets assume they both come and WVU immediately starts winning by year two. At year 3 or 4 it is very possible if not guaranteed that Drew now gets hired by another P4 or a big G5 school and its safe to say that BN has never really shown any promise as a HC before Chronic. Not his fault but he as only been a HC for 2 years including this season which isn't over. We could be faced with another dud and another buyout and we are right back where we are today nursing along until the school is forced to make a change with more money we probably don’t have.
  • Pretty obvious to me from what has been publicly released that there are some major expenses the university will be faced to deal with beyond a coaching change and adding a buyout from another school just doesn't seem like that is palatable regardless of what the AD knows he needs to do.
    • Realistically we have to find a OC or HC that has been a HC with real promise and accept the risk.
  • I don't see how going after a previous P5 coach makes things easier as that salary would probably need to be around 5M with a steep buyout to come with for someone that shouldn't be out of a job if they were good at their job.

If head coaching experience matters – which it should IMO

BN has only 2 years of experience (counting this year) as a HC at Navy before that he was the defensive coordinator
  • Do we really want a DC as a HC?? I am not a fan of that personally feel free to disagree

DC has been a HC since 2015 before taking the OC job at Navy
  • he has 8 years as the CEO
  • i think he took the OC job at Navy because he knew he needed to prove himself outside the FCS before he would be considered for a P4/G5 position
    • Nothing has changed he is still making it happen - you cannot deny the Win Loss column

Head Coaching win loss records

BN is 11-7 as a HC and 6 of this wins is with drew calling the plays and developing the players

Drew C was 75 and 23 as a HC and now 6-0 as an OC
  • Drew Chronic has been the HC at 3 different schools and done extremely well at all of them when they were not all that great if not down right bad when he got there.
    • those schools fall off dramatically around year 2 after he leaves - Links below
      • Moral of the story is they were usually bad before he got there and bad not long after he left
      • he is the difference maker
  • I ADMIT none of this has happened at P4 school but it’s a great resume that I sincerely hope is at the very least being discussed internally at the Athletic Department.

It is important to remember

Navy was 5-7 last year - life before Drew. Only one thing changed in 2024 and that was a new OC
  • We need a HC that can identify our players strengths and mold the offense to them rather than be married to a scheme and blame everyone but themselves for not being able to execute it.

Great links for anyone who cares & who wants to dig into the details. If you decide to go down the rabbit hole look at the teams Drew coached and the records before he got there and how they are doing now.
  • It is eye opening and I think it clearly shows that he knows how to coach and win.

Wren addresses football program

"West Virginia prides itself on the conviction that hard work, grit and determination lead to results. Despite the efforts our football coaches and student-athletes have put forth this season, the results of a tough early schedule are not what we all expected. No one is more disappointed than our coaches and student-athletes, and I have full confidence they are doing everything possible to turn this season around. Your fan support at Milan Puskar Stadium this season has been tremendous, and with five games left, including two at home, I encourage you to continue to support our football team. Our student-athletes need us! I am grateful for each and every one of you and honored to be a Mountaineer and your director of athletics."

WVU Release WVU Women's Soccer - White’s Brace Leads WVU to Win at Houston

HOUSTON, Texas (Oct. 25, 2024) – Behind a brace from junior forward Taylor White, the West Virginia University women’s soccer team earned a 4-1 victory over Houston at the Carl Lewis International Complex in Houston, Texas, on Friday night.

In the final game of the regular season, the Mountaineers (12-4-2, 8-2-1 Big 12) got on the board with a tally from junior forward Ajanae Respass in the first half before adding three goals in the second – two from White and one from sophomore forward Abbey Olexa. White’s brace marked her second of the season, as well as the third for WVU this year.

With the win, West Virginia officially clinched the No. 3 seed and will get a first-round bye in the 2024 Sprouts Farmers Big 12 Championship in Kansas City, Missouri, next week. After being picked to finish seventh in the preseason coaches poll, the Mountaineers secure the program’s ninth top three, regular-season conference finish since joining the Big 12 in 2012.

The lone score in the first half came on a beautiful sequence from sophomore defender Olivia Shertzer to Respass. Shertzer sent an excellent service into the box in the 20th minute that found Respass, who headed it perfectly into the bottom corner of the goal. The 1-0 Mountaineer advantage would stand at the half.

Out of the break, White wasted no time adding to West Virginia’s advantage. After several corner kick chances for the Mountaineers in the early minutes of the half, they finally put the pieces together in the 50th minute. Senior defender Annika Leslie took the corner, and her service found Respass in the box, who sent the ball to White to knock it in for the score.

Then, just 33 seconds later, White added on to advance the Mountaineer lead and earn her second career brace. Fifth-year midfielder Lilly McCarthy dribbled into the attacking third and sent the ball forward to White, who outpaced a UH defender and found the back of the net for a 3-0 WVU lead.

From there, Houston managed to get on the board in the 65th minute, but Olexa would put the icing on the cake in 89th minute with an impressive, unassisted goal from just outside the 18-yard box. The score marked Olexa’s second of the year, while White and Respass are now tied for the team lead with seven goals on the season.

In the final box, West Virginia fired 22 shots, its second-highest in a match this season, while the defense held Houston to just seven. WVU also held a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 10-2 lead in corner kicks. White’s first goal was credited as the game winner. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Smith was called on to make three saves in the match.

Of note, West Virginia has reached 12 wins for the first time since 2019, as well as eight conference wins for the first time since 2016.

West Virginia now looks ahead to the 2024 Sprouts Farmers Market Big 12 Championship, set for Oct. 30 – Nov. 9 at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. As the No. 3 seed, WVU has earned a first-round bye and will face the winner of a first-round match between the No. 6-seed vs. the No. 11-seed in the quarterfinals on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 9 p.m. ET.

Review the biding

1. Fan base wants rid of HCNB
2. AD doesn't have the money for a buyout which is resulting in increased fan apathy which = lower football revenue (ticket sales, parking, concessions etc)
3 Can't afford to drop out of the Big 12 due to decreased revenues with the upcoming profit sharing
4. Increased fan apathy=lower football revenue=lower funding for other sports programs=lower NIL money=lower quality athletes for a coaching staff that cannot seem to develop talent =lower win total=increased fan apathy. In the old days this was what was known as a DO loop.
5. Decreasing national relevance jeopardizes our position for future conference realignment.

The question therefore is do you want WVU athletics to maintain a Power 4 or equivalent position?
If we do the Athletic Department must find creative ways to increase funding from all sources to breakout of the loop. Just throwing ideas out; Can we find an innovative way to incentivize a contract for a lower paid coaching staff to help build a program and share if future success? Other schools must have similar issues, out past management has not been great but many schools have similar circumstances. 2) Can we get a group of high end donors to pony up ( I know everyone who pays wants a seat at the selection table)? 3) How much can the small time donors raise if an enthusiastic fund raising program approached all the alumni? (This one probably takes too much time to be effective in buying out HCNB and staff).
This is a difficult problem for Wren and staff; however they are partially responsible after extending the contract on the basis of a 9-3 season. The answer cannot be to sit on our collective hands so immediate action is required. Just trying to stimulate some constructive discussion rather than the poor us idea that has been beat to death.
