WVU Release WVU Women's Soccer - WVU and UK Play to Draw, Wildcats Advance on PK’s

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 15, 2024) – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with No. 5-seed Kentucky in double overtime in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. After a penalty shootout to decide the advancing team, the Wildcats advanced to Second Round by a 4-2 count inside the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex in Lexington, Kentucky, on Friday night.

Both teams found the back of the net in the second half, but after two overtime periods, the score remained knotted at 1-1 and went to the penalty shootout. The score was tied 1-1 after the first round, but UK took a 2-1 lead after the second. Going into the fourth round with Kentucky holding a 3-2 lead, WVU missed its kick and UK converted to take the shootout win.

The first half ended scoreless, with neither team getting a great look at the goal. The two teams went into the break with just one shot on goal apiece. Out of the break, the Mountaineers struck early when sophomore defender Olivia Shertzer found the back of the net with a rocket from the top of the 18-yard box in the 52nd minute. She dribbled up the sideline and into the attacking third before sending the ball into the upper right-hand corner of the net. The score marked her second of the season.

Unfortunately, Kentucky drew level a few minutes later to make the score 1-1, which held until the end of the second overtime period. The box score showed a 20-18 Kentucky advantage in shots, but the Mountaineers held an 8-4 lead in shots on goal. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Smith tallied seven saves in the contest.

With the draw, WVU moves to 23-20-6 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. Additionally, the Mountaineers are 3-4 in penalty shootouts in tournament play.

West Virginia concluded the 2024 season Friday night, finishing the year with a 12-5-3 overall record, as well as an 8-2-1 record in Big 12 Conference play. The Mountaineers 12 wins this season marked their most 2019, while the eight conference wins are the most since 2016. WVU returned to the NCAA Tournament for the 23rd time in program history and earned its first at-large bid since 2020. Furthermore, coach Nikki Izzo-Brown and the Mountaineers earned the program’s 400th win on Oct. 13, as the Mountaineers’ all-time record now stands at 402-143-76.

WVSPORTS.COM Observations: West Virginia basketball at Pittsburgh

--That was just ugly all around. West Virginia fell 86-62 to Pittsburgh and the numbers pretty much tell the story here as the Mountaineers struggled to both hit shots and stop the Panthers from doing the same. The Panthers got the lead early and never really looked back in this one as they basically controlled this game and really didn't leave any doubt either. The most frustrating part about this one was early the offense was getting good looks but they couldn't make them and never even came back to make it interesting at any point. It's the largest win for Pitt in the series since 2003 and just wasn't good. The Mountaineers raced out to a 2-0 start but this is definitely a bucket of cold ice water on that although I do think it's important not to overreact despite how bad this one was.

--West Virginia was 24-62 from the floor and 6-29 from three, yikes. But it got even worse when you consider that Pitt was 28-58 and 10-27 from three. It's hard to win when you can't score and can't consistently get stops.

--Pittsburgh was 20-27 from the foul line. The Mountaineers were 8-15. Speaking of fouls, those refs really had it our for poor Amani Hansberry. I felt like the kept getting tacked with iffy calls and fouled out after just playing 12 minutes.

--West Virginia only had 8 turnovers which is good but Pitt did score 12 points off those mistakes.

--West Virginia was out rebounded by 13 in this game but limited the Panthers to just 8 offensive rebounds.

--Tucker DeVries, like most of the team, simply didn't play well tonight. He was 2-10 from the field with just 6 points and fouled out in 32 minutes with 2 turnovers and 2 assists. He seemed to struggle tonight with the length of the Panthers but had some open looks that just didn't drop. This team is going to struggle if he can't do much.

--Javon Small finished with 12 points on 5-14 shooting and had 3 turnovers with 2 assists. He had some impressive finishes at the rim at times, but overall the Mountaineers are going to need more out of him especially when DeVries is struggling to score the ball.

--Forgettable game for Toby Okani who had just 2 points on 1-4 shooting and air balled consecutive free throws. Not sure I've ever seen that, but it happened and pretty much sums up the night. Sencire Harris also took some early threes and was just 1-8 from the floor although he did have 6 rebounds and 2 blocks.

--West Virginia made 6 three-pointers in the game and true freshman Jonathan Powell had 4 of those. He finished 6-12 from the field and 4-10 from three with 16 points in 28 minutes. He also didn't turn the ball over some one bright spot for a freshman. The Mountaineers didn't even make their first three until almost 16 minutes into the game.

--KJ Tenner had 7 points on 3-5 shooting and had two assists with no turnovers. His floater is very smooth, but he struggled some defensively against the bigger and stronger Pittsburgh guards.

--Eduardo Andre gave West Virginia some solid minutes again with 9 points on 4-4 shooting, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a block.

--The Mountaineers were 13-23 on layups and dunks in this one and at .873 points per possession. Shew.

--West Virginia never led in this game and really wasn't competitive after the first few minutes. You're going to have games like this sometimes, but this one just wasn't pretty at all. Still, a lot of season left and you have to hope this team can grow from this because a few years ago the Mountaineers embarrassed Pitt on their home floor and they turned around and made the tournament. Not saying that's the likely outcome right now, but there's a lot of season remaining.

Wake up, you rubes!!! It's Gameday!!!

Don't care if you stayed up to watch the fight on Netflix (when it wasn't buffering...) or drowned your sorrows in whatever beverage(s) you were consuming last night after that disaster of a first half, or if you cheered on the ladies to a W at home. Get up!

It's time. Afternoon game that will end up under the night sky.

Somehow, WVU is on a two-game winning streak...not pretty, but there it is. Going for a third.

Here's hoping that some form of defense slows down the Baylor air attack today (errant drones, maybe?)... Gotta figure out something, though. Good pressure up front helps.

Would like to see the o-line create some good running lanes for White, Donaldson, and company... If WVU can pound the rock successfully and win the turnover battle, I like their chances in this one...

We shall see.

Hopefully Greene doesn't get killed and the defense finds some way to slow down the air attack of Baylor...

Not sure where I land on this one - only one "like" team on each schedule - Iowa State... ISU ran all over them, which looks like it opened up the passing game a bit more...hopefully WVU can do the same...

And please, for the love of all that is holy, don't let their receivers run loose like they just broke out of prison...yeesh.

Good guys somehow get it done on a cold, dark night at Mountaineer Field. Those guys from Oregon bring their mojo and get to hear Country Roads!

Good guys by 10.

38-28, WVU. LGM!!!

My random thought for the day

I've talked a lot about how relationships and other factors besides money are still important. But with that said, I do believe you're going to see it hurt some coaches. There is no question each staff has a coach or two who is only there because of their recruiting. Now you may be better off hiring the best coach and letting NIL and winning pull in the same talent or better.
