Track Completes Jesse Owens Classic

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 2, 2015) – The West Virginia University track and field team completed the second and final day of the Jesse Owens Track & Field Classic in Columbus, Ohio, earlier today.

Throughout the two days of competition, Mountaineer competitors recorded eight personal-best marks and nine season-best marks.

“We had some very good moments this weekend. I was especially pleased with how our middle and long distance girls competed,” said coach Sean Cleary. “We still need some fine tuning, but I feel like we can make some improvements in the next two weeks.”

On Saturday, Marsielle McBeam posted a third-place finish in the high jump. McBeam’s mark of 1.70 meters was her best of the outdoor season. Hannah Stone finished in a tie for ninth in the event with a jump of 1.60 meters.

Brianna Kerekes recorded a career-best time in the 800-meter run. Kerekes placed 10th, crossing the line in 2:10.25. Christa D’Egidio finished 36th in 2:18.97.

In the pole vault, Tori Bertrand led the way for the Mountaineers in 20th place overall with a vault of 3.50 meters. Sara Finfrock followed in 26th with a mark of 3.35 meters.

“It is important that we come home and attack exams and training at the highest of level of commitment this week,” Cleary said. “Time management and energy conservation is essential to emerge from the next seven days mentally prepared for our championships. There are a few girls that know they are good enough to compete at the Big 12 meet but need to approach the mental and physical aspects of their preparations as veterans to reach their potential.”

The Mountaineers will be idle next weekend before traveling to Ames, Iowa, from May 15-17, for the 2015 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championship.
