WVU Release WVU to Play Host to No. 10 Texas on Saturday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Jan. 5, 2024) The No. 24 West Virginia University women’s basketball team closes out its homestand against No. 10 Texas, as the Longhorns come to Morgantown and the WVU Coliseum on Saturday, Jan. 6. Tipoff against UT is set for 2 p.m. ET.



The matchup against the Longhorns marks the second ranked opponent to visit the WVU Coliseum this season. West Virginia last defeated an Associated Press (AP) Top-10 team on Dec. 12, 2019, when WVU took down No. 10 Mississippi State, 71-65. The Mountaineers have not defeated a top-10 opponent in Morgantown since upsetting No. 4 Rutgers, 63-54, during the 2008 season.



Saturday’s matchup against Texas will be broadcast live on the Mountaineer Sports Network, including 98.3. WSZT-FM, with Andrew Caridi on the call. Additionally, the game will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ with Nick Farrell and Warren Baker on the call. Live stats and game notes will be available on WVUsports.com.



The contest will serve as the ‘True Blue Game’ and ‘Scouts Day’ at the WVU Coliseum. All fans in attendance are encouraged to wear blue and local boy scout troops are invited to the game. All participating scouts will receive a 2023-24 scout day badge.



Wednesday’s contest marks the 28th all-time meeting between WVU (13-0, 2-0 Big 12) and UT (14-1, 1-1 Big 12). Texas leads the all-time series 17-10 and holds a 6-5 advantage when playing in Morgantown. WVU has lost four straight meetings with the Longhorns.



Texas is 1-1 this season against ranked opponents, defeating No. 11 UCONN on Dec. 3, 80-68, before falling to No. 10 Baylor on Dec. 30, 86-79, to open Big 12 Conference play. The Longhorns picked up their first conference win of the season on Wednesday, defeating Texas Tech, 74-47 on the road.



The Longhorns are shooting 51.8% as a team for the season (2nd in the NCAA) and rank 6th in the NCAA in scoring offense at 90.8 points per game. The Longhorns have shot 50 percent or better in 10 games this season and in five of their last six games.



Last time out, West Virginia collected its second straight conference win with a 68-53 win over Cincinnati at the WVU Coliseum. WVU was led in scoring by redshirt junior guard Kyah Watson with 14 points.



Junior guard JJ Quinerly (18.4), sophomore guard Jordan Harrison (14.2) and fifth-year senior guard Lauren Fields (10.5) pace WVU's offensive effort. The trio all average over 2.5 steals per contest. Quinerly’s 3.2 steals per game is the best mark in the Big 12 and sits 11th nationally.



Harrison has racked up 75 assists this season and is averaging 5.8 per contest which is the third-best in the conference. Watson paces WVU in rebounding, with 6.0 boards per game.



Quinerly now has 951 career points and needs 49 more points to reach 1,000. She is seeking to become the 40th 1,000-point scorer in program history.



The Mountaineers sit at No. 24/25 in the Associated Press and Coaches Poll while they rank No. 21 in the NET Rankings.



West Virginia averages 15.0 steals per contest which is the second-best mark in the nation. Additionally, WVU forces 25.2 turnovers per game, the third most in the country. The Mountaineers add the second-best turnover margin in the country at 9.5 while the 28.1-point win margin this season is the eighth-best mark in the nation.
