WVU Release West Virginia's Women Faces Third Straight Ranked Opponent on Saturday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Feb. 23, 2024) The No. 22 West Virginia University women’s basketball team is back at home for a matchup against No. 24 Baylor on Saturday, Feb. 24, inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown. Tipoff against the Bears is set for 2 p.m. ET.



Saturday will also mark the final 50 Years of West Virginia Women’s Basketball celebration with Alumni set to be recognized at halftime of the contest. Additionally, WVU will wear black uniforms for the ‘Black Out’ as fans are also encouraged to wear black for the game.




The matchup against Baylor marks the fifth time this season the Mountaineers have squared off against an AP-ranked team. WVU is 2-2 on the season against ranked team, including a 1-1 mark at home.



Saturday’s matchup with Baylor will be broadcast live on the Mountaineer Sports Network, including 98.3 WBKE-FM, with Andrew Caridi on the call. Fans also can listen to the game on the Mountaineer Sports Network.



Additionally, Saturday’s game also will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ with Nick Farrell and Meg Bulger on the call. Live stats and game notes will be available on WVUsports.com.



Saturday’s game marks the 29th all-time meeting between WVU (22-4, 11-4 Big 12) and Baylor (20-6, 9-6 Big 12). West Virginia is 5-23 all-time against the Bears, including 1-10 in games played in Morgantown. West Virginia fell, 65-58, in the first meeting this season but swept the season series last season.



In the first meeting this season, WVU struggled to find its offensive rhythm shooting just 32.3 percent from the floor. The mark was the third lowest this season, contributing to the Mountaineers' seven-point road loss.



Baylor comes into the contest winners of two straight to sit just behind the Mountaineers in fifth place of the conference standings. The Bears defeated Kansas, 96-61, its last time out.



Three Bears are averaging double figures this season, led by Dre’una Edwards with 12.2 points per game. She adds a team-leading 1.7 steals. Sarah Andrews (11.2) and Darianna Littlepage-Buggs (11.0) also score in double figures as Andrews adds 3.9 assists per game. Aijha Blackwell paces the team in rebounds with 8.1 per game.



The Mountaineers come into the contest in the middle of the toughest stretch of the season, facing its third straight ranked opponent in as many games. WVU opened the stint of ranked games with a 70-66 win over No. 23 Oklahoma before falling on the road to No. 10 Kansas State on Wednesday.



The Mountaineers were led in scoring by junior guard JJ Quinerly who finished with 22 points, marking the 13th time this season she has scored over 20 in a game. Junior guard Kyah Watson corralled seven rebounds in the game to reach 500 in her career.



Quinerly (19.2), sophomore guard Jordan Harrison (13.3) and fifth-year guard Lauren Fields (10.6) continue to pace WVU's offensive effort this season. Quinerly is the third-leading scorer per game in the conference while her 499 total points are also third in the league. She is one of 11 players in program history to record 1000 career points and 200 steals. With one point, Quinerly will become the 28th player in program history to reach 500 points in a season.



The Mountaineers have the top four steal leaders in the Big 12 with Quinerly (3.2), Harrison (3.0), Fields (2.3) and junior guard Kyah Watson (2.3). Harrison has racked up 145 assists this season, the best in the conference, and is averaging 5.6 per game. Watson paces WVU in rebounding, with 6.6 per game.
