WVU Release WVU Set for NCAA Golf Championships

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 23, 2024) – The West Virginia University golf team will make its first NCAA Championships appearance since 1947 when the Mountaineers begin competition at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California, starting on Friday.



Senior Jackson Davenport, juniors Todd Duncan, Max Green and Pierce Grieve and sophomore Kaleb Wilson make up the West Virginia lineup. Freshman Harrison Thompson will serve as the alternate.



There will be 30 teams competing and six individual participants for a total of 156 golfers in the field.



Finals play consists of three days of stroke play on Friday, May 24 through Sunday, May 26 (54 holes), after which the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team will be determined. That is followed by a final day of 18 holes of stroke play on Monday, May 27 to determine the top eight teams that will advance to match play as well as the 72-hole individual champion. The team national champion will be determined by a match-play format that will consist of quarterfinals and semifinals conducted on Tuesday, May 28, followed by finals on Wednesday, May 29.



The Mountaineers will be grouped with Clemson and Utah on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, WVU begins the first round in tee times, starting at 11:30 a.m. ET (8:30 a.m. local) on the 10th tee. On Saturday, WVU will tee off at 4:50 p.m. ET (1:50 p.m. local) on the 1st tee. Teams will be re-paired according to score for Sunday’s round.



WVU made its second NCAA Regionals appearance since the program was reinstated in 2015-16. Seeded 10th, WVU finished tied for third place at the Rancho Santa Fe Regional to advance to the NCAA Golf Championships for the first time since 1947.
