WVU Release WVU Golf Completes First Round at NCAA Championships

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 24, 2024) – The West Virginia University golf team played in its first NCAA Golf Championships since 1947 on Friday at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.



In the first round, WVU was led today by juniors Pierce Grieve and Max Green, both shooting 76 on the par-72, 7,538-yard Omni La Costa North Course. Grieve made 10 straight pars to close out his round. Grieve and Green are tied for 81st place.



Senior Jackson Davenport shot 77 and junior Todd Duncan recorded a 78. Sophomore Kaleb Wilson posted an 82.



As a team, the Mountaineers are tied for 27th place with North Florida after shooting a 307 (+19) and ahead of Texas Tech and Purdue.



The second round will take place on Saturday with WVU teeing off at 4:50 p.m. ET (1:50 p.m. local time). WVU will once again be grouped with Clemson and Utah. Teams will be re-paired according to score for Sunday’s round.



Finals play consists of three days of stroke play on Friday, May 24 through Sunday, May 26 (54 holes), after which the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team will be determined. That is followed by a final day of 18 holes of stroke play on Monday, May 27 to determine the top eight teams that will advance to match play as well as the 72-hole individual champion. The team national champion will be determined by a match-play format that will consist of quarterfinals and semifinals conducted on Tuesday, May 28, followed by finals on Wednesday, May 29.
