Rowing Finishes EAWRC Sprints

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 3, 2015) – The West Virginia University rowing team finished the EAWRC Sprints in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, this afternoon. The Mountaineers’ top finishes came from the Second and Third Varsity Eight boats, which placed second in the Petite Final.

The Mountaineers’ Second Varsity Eight posted a time of 7:06.876 to finish third in its heat to advance to the Petite Final in the afternoon session. West Virginia placed second in the Petite Final, trailing Georgetown’s boat by just two seconds with a time 6:51.010. The Second Varsity Eight crew finished eighth overall out of 13 crews.

“I'm proud of how aggressively the Second Varsity Eight raced today. They raced one seed higher than they were ranked coming into this event with a lot of good teams. They consistently come out and race hard,” said coach Jimmy King.

The Third Varsity Eight posted a time of 7:55.260 to finish sixth in its heat to advance to the Petite Final in the afternoon session. As the No. 11-seed the Mountaineers finished eighth overall and second in the Petite Final in front of Holy Cross, Rutgers and Buffalo with a time of 7:31.231.

“I really like how the Varsity Four and the Third Varsity Eight made big improvements from our last outing. We are looking to have them keep those changes heading into the Big 12 Championship,” King stated. “The Third Varsity Eight raced three places higher than their seed with a strong second place in their petite.”

Earlier today, the First Varsity Four crossed the line in 8:01.334 in its heat to advance to the Petite Final. West Virginia finished third in the Petite Final, trailing Holy Cross’s boat by five seconds with a time 7:56.254 to finish ninth overall out of 11 crews.

The First Varsity Eight posted a time of 6:56.455 in the Petite Final to conclude its run at the EAWRC Sprints.

“We still have some work to do and some changes to make in our First Varsity Eight leading into championship racing, and we are excited to take the strides we made this week forward as we head into the Big 12’s,” King explained.

The Mountaineers are idle until the Big 12 Championship in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17.
