WVU DMR Team Takes First at Penn Relays
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 24, 2015) – The West Virginia University track and field distance medley relay team took first place at the 120th edition of the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania .
The DMR team, which competed late Thursday night, was comprised of Kelly Williams, Christa D’Egidio, Brianna Kerekes and Amy Cashin. The group raced to first in 11:40.54, edging out second-place Maryland by two seconds.
“The DMR was a positive moment for the girls. It’s always fun to win a race and for that we are pleased,” said coach Sean Cleary. “While we ran well on the DMR, I believe we still have a lot more to offer.”
The lone WVU competitor Friday was freshman Shamoya McNeil. McNeil placed sixth overall in the triple jump with a leap of 12.38 meters. The jump was McNeil’s third-best as a Mountaineer.
“Shamoya had a nice day today,” Cleary said. “Learning to deal with adverse conditions is part of our sport. To qualify for the finals was a very encouraging result.
“We accomplished a few things this weekend. Katlyn Shelar did a nice job coming back after sitting out of competition for the last month with a wrist injury. The conditions were very average for the vault, and she handled herself well.”
The Mountaineers compete in the Jesse Owens Track Classic in Columbus, Ohio, from May 1-2. This will mark the final competition for West Virginia prior to the Big 12 Outdoor Championships from May 15-17 in Ames, Iowa.
