Baseball Falls at Radford

RADFORD, Va. (April 29, 2015) – The West Virginia University baseball team was unable to capitalize on early offensive chances and eventually fell 9-4 to Radford on Wednesday afternoon at RU Baseball Stadium.

West Virginia had runners on the corners with no outs in the first and third innings and the Mountaineers were unable to score in either inning.

The loss drops the Mountaineers to 24-19 overall, finishing with four runs on nine hits with two errors. Radford improved to 30-14 with nine runs on 13 hits and two errors.

Radford’s Patrick Marshall gave the Highlanders a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second with a solo home run down the left field line. It was his team-leading eighth of the season.

A double to left center field by Brad Keen in the bottom of the fifth drove in two runs to extend the Radford lead to 3-0.

West Virginia got on the board in the top of the sixth by loading the bases with two outs. With sophomore designated hitter Ray Guerrini at the plate, freshman third baseman Kyle Davis scored from third base on a passed ball to bring the score to 3-1.

Radford wasted no time extending the lead back to three runs with an RBI single to left field by Aaron Scoville in the bottom of the sixth to bring the advantage to 4-1.

Junior center fielder KC Huth brought the score to 4-2 in the top of the seventh by doubling to left center field to score freshman shortstop Tucker Cascadden all the way from first base.

The Highlanders scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to extend the lead to 6-2 as Hunter Higgerson singled up the middle to score Shane Johnsonbaugh. Marshall also scored on the single after a Huth error in center field.

West Virginia scored another run in the top of the eighth on an RBI fielder’s choice to second base by sophomore right fielder Shaun Wood, scoring sophomore first baseman Jackson Cramer from third base.

Radford scored three more runs in the bottom of the ninth to complete the scoring on a two-run single by Johnsonbaugh and an RBI single by Josh Reavis.

It was a staff day for the Mountaineer pitching staff as eight different pitchers saw action, but the loss went to freshman right-hander Conner Dotson (0-4), who started the afternoon. Dotson gave up one run on three hits in two innings.

The Mountaineers hitters were stifled all afternoon by Radford starter Zack Ridgely (3-1), who allowed just one unearned run. Ridgely scattered five hits over six innings with nine strikeouts and one walk.

Huth, Davis and freshman left fielder Caleb Potter had two hits apiece for West Virginia. Marshall was a triple shy of the cycle to lead Radford offensively with four hits, finishing with three runs scored.
