RICHMOND, Va. (March 5, 2023) The West Virginia baseball team was unable to close out the weekend sweep as the Mountaineers fell to Richmond, 7-3, at Pitt Field on Sunday. WVU falls to 6-4 while the Spiders improve to 4-6.

Redshirt-senior Caleb McNeely hit two home runs in the game while fellow redshirt-senior Dayne Leonard added one of his own to provide the scoring for the Mountaineers on the day. Sophomore JJ Wetherholt also added two hits on the day to continue his torrid start to the season.

Sophomore Grant Siegel got the start on the mound and threw 4.0 innings while striking out three and allowing two runs. Freshman Robby Porco suffered the loss after allowing four runs in an inning of work.

Leonard gave the Mountaineers the early lead in the first with an opposite-field solo shot, his second home run in as many days. McNeely doubled the WVU lead in the second with a solo blast to left.

Richmond got one run back in the bottom of the second before evening up the game in the fourth. The Spiders took the lead and blew the game open in the sixth with five runs in the frame.

McNeely tried to jump start a rally in the seventh with a leadoff home run, but that was all for the Mountaineer offense on the day.

WVU got the tying run to the plate in the ninth, loading the bases with one out but a flyout and strikeout ended the game.

The Mountaineers are back in action on Wednesday for their home opener against Canisius. First pitch from Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark is set for 3 p.m.
