Baseball Drops Series Against No. 4 TCU with Loss

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 2, 2015) – The West Virginia University baseball team went down early and was never able to come back as it fell 6-2 on Saturday afternoon at Monongalia County Ballpark.

The attendance of 2,107 marked the fifth time this season WVU has had 2,000 or more fans at Monongalia County Ballpark.

The win for TCU clinches the series as the Horned Frogs improved to 36-9 overall and 12-5 in the Big 12. West Virginia dropped to 24-21 overall and 6-11 in Big 12 play.

“We talk about it all the time, stopping the damage and having a routine to get back in,” coach Randy Mazey said. “It’s not as easy as it sounds. When the game gets to speeding up on you a little bit its hard to slow it down. We need to find a way to keep them from putting up crooked numbers on us. If we can limit damage and keep teams to scoring a run an inning, I think we’re good enough offensively to win games, but we’ve had one bad inning the whole game and it has cost us a lot.”

TCU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when it had the bases loaded and Evan Skoug grounded into a double play. Cody Jones, who has hit by a pitch to lead off the game, scored on the play.

The Horned Frogs took advantage of numerous mistakes in the top of the third, scoring five runs to push the advantage to 6-0 on three passed balls, two hit by pitches and one walk. Skoug had an RBI single through the right side to start the scoring, while Keaton Jones was hit by a pitch to drive in a run. Elliott Barzilli, Nolan Brown and Keaton Jones all scored on passed balls for the final three runs of the frame.

West Virginia got on the board in the bottom of the seventh to make it 6-1 with back-to-back hits. Senior shortstop Taylor Munden doubled with one out to left field, and scored in the next at bat when freshman second baseman Kyle Davis singled up the middle.

Sophomore right fielder Shaun Wood blasted his eighth home run of the season, a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth to cut the deficit to 6-2.

Despite taking the loss, junior left-hander Ross Vance (6-4) struck out eight in six innings. Vance gave up six runs, four earned, on six hits with two walks and five hit by pitches.

The West Virginia bats were stifled early by TCU right-hander Preston Morrison (10-1), who allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks in eight innings.

West Virginia and TCU return to action for the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game has been designated as Kid’s Day, where kids 12 and under can run the bases and receive autographs following the game.

West Virginia will send sophomore right-hander Chad Donato (6-4), while TCU will start left-hander Alex Young (8-2).

The game will feature a free video stream, courtesy of Coca-Cola, on WVUsports.com while the radio broadcast can be heard throughout the state on Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG affiliates with Jeff Culhane and Ernie Galusky on the call. Additionally, fans can listen to the broadcast via the WVU Gameday App on their mobile device, as well as the TuneIn Radio App and the leanStream player at WVUsports.com/audio.
