There were only TWO bowl games in 1922, with WVU beating Gonzaga, 21-13, in the San Diego East-West Christmas Classic and Southern Cal beating Penn State, 14-3, in the first Rose Bowl game in the newly constructed Rose Bowl.
Coach Clarence “Doc” Spears guided the ONLY undefeated team in WVU history (10-0-1) to this day.
No national champion was selected in those years. “Experts” retroactively chose 1922 “national champs” in later years. I chose WVU as national champs because they had as valid a claim to it as any team.
Coach Clarence “Doc” Spears’ team SHUT OUT 7 of its 11 opponents. Even if you’re playing Little Sisters of the Poor that’s pretty impressive.
WVU outscored its opponents, 267 to 34! So the Mountaineers get no credit for being impressive on offense and defense even though they played only TWO teams with losing records? If you remove the 10 losses to WVU the Mountaineers’ opponents had a 47-26-4 record! That’s a 64.4% winning percentage!
Pitt, for example, under legendary Coach Pop Warner, who had a national youth football program named after him, was 8-2, held FIVE opponents scoreless and outscored its opposition, 190-43, but lost 9-6 to WVU.
West Virginia Wesleyan was 8-2.
Gonzaga was 5-3 and outscored its opponents, 215-79.
Washington and Lee was 5-3-1 but beat North Carolina State, 14-0; tied WVU, 12-12; and beat Emory & Henry, 85-0, to open its season.
Ohio University was 5-3
Rutgers was 5-4, had its best season in 3 years.
Marshall was 5-4.
Virginia was 4-4-1.
Indiana was 1-4-2.
Cincinnati was 1-7-1.
The 1922 team beat strong competition, unlike the 1988 WVU team that played TWO teams with a winning record for an undefeated regular season before losing to Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.
Stop dismissing the undefeated 1922 team as one that played nobodies. Tell that to Pop Warner, Wesleyan which lost only 1 other game that season, Washington & Lee, on-a-roll Rutgers!
