The reason to not have 16 teams in a conference.

All of those first-place teams `ISU, BYU, ASU and Colorado` have not played each other this season and none of them defeated all the other tied teams. According to Big 12 rules, the next tiebreaker is their records against common conference opponents.

Until a real governing body steps in and cuts the shit, this is the reality of what it needs to be. We’re in some bastardized pro/rel system based on a combination of media dollars and merit over 5 year intervals so conferences need to add schools in advance.

If they were smart they would reorganize everything into 16 regional divisions 4 teams in each region. But it will never happen because it makes sense.
