WVU Release West Virginia Rifle Hits Season High in Win Over No. 7 Navy

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Jan 18, 2025) The No. 3-ranked West Virginia University rifle team collected its ninth straight win of the season and its first in 2025 with a 4754-4720 result over No. 7 Navy on Saturday inside the WVU Shell Building at the WVU Rifle Range.



It marks the sixth-ranked opponent the Mountaineers have defeated this season. The Mountaineers are 33-8 all-time against Navy in a series that dates back to 1966. The win extends the Mountaineers' regular season win streak to 22 straight matches.



West Virginia claimed both smallbore and air rifle with marks of 2363 and 2391, respectively. Navy fired marks of 2346 in smallbore and 2374 in air rifle. All three of West Virginia’s marks in the match were new season highs.

For smallbore and air rifle, seniors Gavin Barnick and Natalie Perrin, sophomores Lauri Syrja and Griffin Lake and freshman Ashlyn Blake served as counters for the match.



Barnick finished first on the overall leaderboard as his marks in smallbore and air rifle also topped the podium. He scored an aggregate score of 1191 with a 593 in smallbore and a 598 in air rifle. His score in smallbore tied a career-high while his aggregate score and air rifle mark were a season high.



Lake finished in second with an 1189 total. His 592 in smallbore matched a season-best as he added a 197 in air rifle. Syrja finished in third with 1187 as he hit a season-high 598 in air rifle and added a 589 in smallbore.



Blake finished in fifth place with 1185 after marks of 589 in smallbore and 596 in air rifle. Perrin finished just behind with 1183 after posting the highest air rifle mark of 598 with Barnick and Syrja. She added a mark of 585 in smallbore.



Freshman Jacob Wisman posted an 1177 (583 SB – 594 AR), freshman Camryn Camp scored an 1176 (582 SB – 594 AR) and sophomore Maximus Duncan rounded out the scores with an 1158 (569 SB – 589 AR).


The Mountaineers are back on the line next weekend when they compete in two road matches on Saturday and Sunday in Ohio. WVU opens the weekend on Saturday against Ohio State before heading down the road to square off with Akron on Sunday.
