—West Virginia head coach Neal Brown said it’s his favorite week of the season. They have their guys all football and are able to spend quite a bit of time away from the game with dinners and some semblance of home. They’ll do a team wide Thanksgiving meal here.

—A three phase win. They can play better but it was quality football against Texas. Special teams punt protection was much improved and they fielded all their kicks. The field goal was huge and the one they missed they didn’t execute some things to get them closer. Defensively they finished the game. If you go back through their season they’ve had opportunities to finish the game and haven’t been able to do that. They limited the explosive plays overall. Offensively it starts with zero turnovers and they converted some third and longs.

—Award side Jarret Doege was Big 12 player of the week. In the first half he made some big time throws. Sean Mahone was defensive player of the game. He was all over the field. Offensively Leddie Brown and he forced 10 missed tackles and 102 yards after contact. He did a really nice job of running through tackles. Special teams Austin Brinkman the long snapper. Offensive lineman of the week was Brandon Yates and he’s played his best football of the season the past two weeks. Blue collar award was Wyatt Milum on offense and defense was Scottie Young. Scout team awards on offense was Tomas Rimac, defense was Quay Mosby and special teams was Andrew Wilson-Lamp. Derek Ambrosino was the juice squad award.

—Huge game at Kansas on the road. He has a lot of respect for their head coach. They are great talent evaluators and schematically he does a great job. He’s got a high level buy in there. Offensively they stress you with shifting and motion pre snap to get you confused. Jalon Daniels has been electric the last two weeks and has made a lot of plays. He is confident and he’s changed really the demeanor of the football team. He’s a dual threat guy that has been extremely accurate the past two weeks. Running back Neal got hurt but he is doing a nice job too. Their offensive line is really coming along. Defensively they play really hard and physical and at each level of the defense they have some high end players. They’ve got to stack some games and play some consistent football.

—Brown said they’re going to be thin at some spots with injuries. Hopeful Lance Dixon can get back and give some snaps and same with Bryce Ford-Wheaton. They are hopeful on Charles Woods. VanDarius Cowan’s status is up in the air and is up to him but he is not injured.

—Saint McLeod is a guy that Brown likes his demeanor and he’ll get the start this week.

—The dime package took Texas off guard. They basically saw how they were fitting the box and went to some two back looks. They then had to mix up their box numbers to keep them off balance. It gives them an answer and it fit with the personnel they had to use.

—Brown said Kansas is capable of doing a lot of things and will use tricks and go for it on fourth down. They’ll be ready for gimmicks and trickery.

—Brown used a trick play and it went as bad as it could possibly go.

—Kansas hasn’t changed who they are from when the staff was at Buffalo.

—Scottie Young is a smart football player. He understands schematics of the game. A lot of players don’t have the awareness and he’s a throw back and understands team defense. He has the agility two play five different spots.

—Third downs they haven’t been bad in manageable ones. Time of possession it matters when the other team is really good on offense. It’s not the first stat he looks at unless the other team is really good on offense and he thinks he’s going to struggle. He wants to score fast but that’s not where they are right now. They’ve done a lot more check with Brown to get them in the best plays since the bye and they’ve sustained some drives.

—Jarret Doege had a clean pocket for the most part against Texas. He threw the ball and had a good day. The ball really jumped off his hand.

—Analytics have changed the game on third and fourth down decisions and that’s where Brown looks at it the most. It gives you confidence in making this decisions
