Trump's tariff move shows he flunked economics

Yes...and Trump thinks we should manufacture more of the products we use instead of importing them. He also believes that it would also lead to more jobs. It is really not that complicated.
So why doesn't Trump understand that the number of American workers that use steel and aluminum to make their products (and will be hurt) far, far outnumber the number of American workers that produce steel and aluminum? (approx. 5M vs. 180K for steel) The net result is a tax on American families that use those products which essentially wipes out the modest tax cut that average American families recently received. I'll let Larry Kudlow, Trump economic advisor and conservative, state it better. Since so many of the things Americans consumers buy today are made of steel or aluminum, a 25 percent tariff will likely get passed on to consumers at the cash register. This is a regressive tax on low-income families.

It's bad news for Americans but politically it's a good thing for Dems as having a trade war with the world heading into the 2018 midterms won't be a good talking point for Repubs. How long will Trump supporters continue to support him when he keeps kicking them to the curb?

Kudlow: Mr. President, tariffs are really tax hikes

1. protecting our steel and aluminum industries is a matter of national security.
2. the increased cost for products made with steel and aluminum will be minimal at best.

I've posted articles explaining this. Quit being lazy and read them.

US Steel made record profits last quarter and has had steady output for 30 years....and now it's a national security interest? lmao. You rubes will believe anything.

BTW, Mattis disagrees with you on national security.

I've told you a thousand times on this board......I don't have any problems with paying more taxes. If more American jobs are created by Trumps policies.....good....If not.....bad deal. If more people have jobs....thats more tax monies and money supporting the economy. People out of work don't pay taxes and spend less.

I will wait and see if his tariff plan works before I condemn it.....I do support him trying to do something. If it does resurrect some industries and results in more jobs for our workers...I will give him kudos......if not....I will call it a big mistake.
It hasn't worked in the past, but sure let's try it again. Who cares if steel dependent industries shed way more jobs than the steel industry creates...at least we tried.

I'd be willing to bet there will be no tariffs and new trade agreements will be worked out with Canada, Mexico and China. Sometimes you start with one position to get to another.

Why would China, Mexico and Canada agree to anything? The US just made themselves noncompetitive globally in steel and steel reliant industries. on the backs of the American consumer. I think they'll wait it out.

Isn't NAfta up for signing again? I would bet this is more a ploy to get a better bargaining position with Canada and Mexico. I would hope that with China it's a bargaining position to get more pressure on NK from China. No American company can compete with .10/ hr wages and the dumping of material at below cost. I'am not in favor of tariffs, I'm not in favor of dumping below costs either.

Why are we tariffing Europe? None of this makes sense. Rationalize it all you want...it's awful and will hurt Americans.

Nothing has hurt Americans more than some of our own regulations. We shall see if Trump carries these threats of tariffs out. He negotiated a lower price for the AF 1 jets.Let's see this play out.

Like what? You're like Trump, just saying stuff and hoping you don't get called on it.
Almost every EO that Obama did hurt real Americans. Thank god that hemorrhoid is getting treated with Preparation Trump and slowly disappearing .

Which part isn't true? he is a miserable person and the EO's are almost gone, the economy is looking up, energy production is up, I guess by all measurable indicators, things are better.

Trump lies and you believe it. It's like the sun coming up.

Let's pretend that BO told one lie in 8 years (I kept my doctor, did you?). Trump tells multiple big lies daily/weekly...no one before or after can ever compare to Lying Donald Trump. Trump is doing everything he can to destroy America and our relationship with our allies. Latest terrible idea....let's slap big tariffs on our best trading partners/allies (and everyone else) and start a big trading war and raise consumer prices for all Americans. Super idea [eyeroll]

The fact that you, and others like you, are so apoplectic at everything he does is just further proof that we're finally on the right path. I mean, he's trying to level the playing field for American companies and employee's and you dipshits are crying like little girls. I can hear the squealing now from you guys when he pulls us out of NAFTA completely and negotiates agreements with Canada and Mexico independently. This is so much fun.

You're always quoting Thomas Sowell but last week when I posted a column by Sowell decrying tariffs you didn't like it. Hmmm.

"We are extremely worried about the consequences of a trade war and are urging the White House to not advance with this plan," Ryan spokeswoman AshLee Strong said in a statement Monday morning. "The new tax reform law has boosted the economy and we certainly don't want to jeopardize those gains."

"The idea of imposing steel or aluminum tariffs of any kind is an affront to economic freedom," stated Club for Growth President David McIntosh said in a statement. "First and foremost, it's bad for the American worker. For every steel worker job that might be saved because of a tariff, our country will lose even more American jobs in auto plants, construction, and so many other industries."

I’m of the belief the tariffs don’t come to fruition and he’s using them as a bargaining chip. No one wins in a trade war. It’s like MAD, but if Trump is showing his willingness to do it, it’ll likely strengthen his position on his ultimate strategy.

This is where we depart obvi. You don’t think he has one, I actually do. I think Brushy might be on target with this as a mere decoy in NAFTA negotiations. Goes back to Art of the Deal, this is his guiding playbook. He’s successfully implemented the strategy a couple of different times on various items and the credit is given to his “advisors (Rex/Mattis) thankfully winning the argument”. NATO defense commitments is a big one to point to off the top of my head. The wall, DACA, and immigration reform will be another. Ditto with gun control.

I disagree with your premise that he is wreaking havoc on trade. The fvcker secured almost a $trillion dollar trade deal with China on his Asia trip. IMO, he isn’t doing that bad of a job. If he actually enacts the tariffs, then you can shove that back in my face, but I almost guarantee it’s a feint for his ultimate goal. I’m just not sure yet what it is but I suspect NAFTA and possibly some trade deals with the EU and/or bilateral deal on the heals of Brexit.

Trump is a limp wristed pussy if he doesn't implement the tariffs. Implement them and let the cards fall where they may..
