Track to Compete at Penn Relays

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 22, 2015) – The West Virginia University track and field team travels to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for the 120th edition of the prestigious Penn Relays at Franklin Field from April 23-24.

This will mark the Mountaineers’ fifth straight weekend of competition during the outdoor season and will be the fifth straight year WVU has participated at the Penn Relays.

Last season, Morgantown, West Virginia, native Sarah Martinelli highlighted the action, winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:17.47.

“The Penn Relays is always a highlight for our track and field team. Having the opportunity to compete in front of 50,000 people is, for some, a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said coach Sean Cleary. “We made a goal to run in more relays with this group. I am excited to watch our distance medley relay. We have good depth in the jumps as we look to make progress with the triple jump, high jump and pole vault. The distance races will be covered by Savanna Plombon and Renee Maisonneuve in the 5,000 and steeplechase, respectively. We have always had strong results at this meet. We expect to continue that tradition.”

Freshman triple jumper Shamoya McNeil recorded a personal-best jump as a Mountaineer for the second straight week last weekend at the Virginia Challenge. McNeil jumped 12.51 meters and took first place in the triple jump. The mark currently ranks No. 28 in the East Region and is the sixth-best jump among all freshmen competitors.

The action will get underway at 10 a.m. on Thursday morning and continue at 9 a.m. on Friday.
