Stewart Mandel on Dana Holgorsen's "hot seat"

So it's all about mentioning the casino. I had no problem with him going there, in moderation I do not see it as a negative. The late W.C. Fields reportedly said, "If you sit down to play poker look for the 'sucker'. If you do not recognize him, get up." Coach would not have to get up, I meant that as a compliment. Life is all about taking chances and he's taking a big one. I admire that, Mrs. Orlaco.

With perspective... ...maybe it's WVU taking the chance. ...and liking their odds (since you seem to think gambling is a poor choice).

Mrs. Orlaco, they both are taking a chance...or gamble if you will. It's simply a matter of semantics, is it not? Neither word is inherently evil. As the late Yogi Berra actually did say, "If you come to a fork in the road, take it." They did. I mean you no disrespect.

If you didn't criticize then suggesting (you guys) I am an apologist would seem silly. ...and it did.

DH is now extremely wealthy. DH will EASILY get another well paying job. It's not a gamble (in that casino kind of way). It's no diff than you shopping around for another job...or simply not accepting whatever your current company is offering. What do some people refer to it as....oh yea, the American way.

Actually, Walker makes a very good case for Dana be a natural gambler and letting this contract issue play out until the very end. Dana is gambling that he will have a good year have leverage to re-work this deal in his favor. Considering our loses on defense and who we have at QB it sounds like a risky move to not have signed Lyon's deal. Also in the process he has pissed Lyon's off so gambling is a very good way to describe Dana's approach.

And, yes, Dana will get another high paying job at some point

I wouldn't really say Dana is making a gamble. If he gets fired, he still receives all of his guaranteed money, and from what I understand his extension offer included none.

he was offered some partial guaranteed money

Dana is on a 'hot seat' alright. The seat is approximately $4M a year hot. Dana has already made enough money to last him about 10 life times .............. thanks to Mountaineer football. Dana can't be hurt. He already tucked his future away ................ in the bank.

I'm huge Stew fan. I knew him personally, although admittedly decades before he was HC at WVU. However what you have not considered is that a wonderfully talented Orange Bowl team had arrived having survived a Big East season. Virtually impossible in the B12 given the same schedule. Depth of talent is one thing Dana has done well with and IMO will finally begin to pay dividends. The O must be good, very good, this year or he is toast. The D is replacing major talent but if I'm correct you will not see a complete rebuild this year. Overall 2016 will be a measurably better season than '15. (I will also add that 2017 may well be a HUGE year) This is why Holgs didn't sign Lyon's reasonable contract, offered based on summation of pure results to date. Holgs knows his stock rises next year ('16) based on what he sees in the cupboard, so why sign? Two reasonable men doing business. I'm quite optimistic but if this team fails to achieve, I'd say 8 wins (7 absolute minimum) the next HC inherits a team ready for greatness - even in the B12.

Or... it might have simply come down to a "my dick is bigger than yours" situation.

I'm not sure we'll ever know. Negotiations take on their own ebb & flow and, if there is any animosity between the parties, the talks break down. We may not like it, but that is the way of the world.

Dana's options if he has a successful season.
1) Renegotiate his current contract at WVU
2) Seek greener pastures at another school
3) Form a boy band made up of adult divorced males.
4) Form a sky diving club.
5) Just chill for a while because he already has enough money to live on.
6) Lots of other things.

Dana's options if he has a bad season and is let go.
1) Take a coordinator position at another school and live off of that salary while his WVU money grows and grows.
2) Form a boy band made up of adult divorced males.
3) Form a sky diving club.
4) Just chill for a while because he already has enough money to live on.
5) Lots of other things.

This dude has to be sweating it big time.

It is truly funny that we, members of the fan forums, are even still debating the status of HC DH considering his way less than stellar results. Reminds me of a comment that a friend of mine said (he owns a diner) when a customer complained about the meal he bought. My friend said, "It is just hard to find anybody to work anymore." So instead of looking for someone to improve his business my friend was content with delivering less than stellar results. Hello DH.

In the end it comes down to dollars and cents. A coach is worth what someone is willing to pay for him its just like buying a house. If coach Dana wants a better deal he has to produce above whatever the current expectations are of the AD. He also needs to receive job offers from programs that are perceived to be a step up. Until either one of these two scenarios happen he is in a take it or leave it situation.

People seem to take things to personal. In the end business is business. unfortunately in the business world when it comes to negotiations someone usually ends up on the wrong side of the gun.

It will be interesting see how this turns out. Gee and Lyons are not in Dana corners. Once Ollie left and stopped covering for Dana it allowed those inside the football program to really see what Dana was which is a great offensive mind that is not ready to lead a program,

Curious to see how you feel about this now?

And how is that restaurant doing exactly?

Ask him if Arlen made it to State's this year. I saw a young Hawaiian kid working at that Sugarfoot's that had some huge guns on him wearing a Billdozer jersey.

Has Buck brought in another ringer from the islands?

Who cares.

It's basketball season. My humble plea to the board: stop with the football mess until next season?
