UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (April 11, 2023) – A seven-run sixth inning for Penn State proved to be too much to overcome, Tuesday night as the West Virginia baseball team fell to the Nittany Lions, 11-6, at Lubrano Park. WVU falls to 23-10 on the season while Penn State improves to 18-11.

Graduate student Tevin Tucker finished the night with three hits while junior Landon Wallace drove in two runs. On the mound, sophomore Grant Siegel got the start and threw three scoreless innings.

Two batters into the game, the Mountaineers had the lead as sophomore JJ Wetherholt led off with a double before coming into score on a Wallace single.

WVU added two more runs in the second on a fielder’s choice and a wild pitch before tacking on additional runs in the third and fourth to take a 5-0 lead.

Penn State got one run back in the home half of the fourth before a sacrifice fly from Wetherholt in the sixth put the Mountaineers back up by five.

Things were looking good for the Mountaineers until the bottom of the sixth when the wheels came off for WVU as four pitchers combined to give up seven runs on three hits, two walks, two hit-by-pitches and two crucial errors. Both errors came on the same play as the Nittany Lions hit a little league grand slam on a grounder back to the pitcher with the ball being thrown around by the Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers struggled to regroup as they had just one hit the rest of the night while Penn State extended its lead with three more runs in the seventh.

West Virginia will look to rebound this weekend in Stillwater against No. 18 Oklahoma State. First pitch on Friday is set for 7 p.m. ET.

The games do not get any easier. I just don't think their pitching is up to the task as of yet.
