No improvement under DH.

Let’s look at the record:

10-3 in 2011 in Big East with Bill Stewart’s recruits.

7-6 in 2012, 5th in Big 12, lost Pinstripe Bowl.

4-8 in 2013, 7th in Big 12, no bowl game for first time in 12 years.

7-6 in 2014, 4th in Big 12, lost Liberty Bowl.

7-5 in 2015, 5th in Big 12 (3-way tie), bowl game to go.

35-28 for Dana at WVU (matches Nehlen’s 7-win average over 21 seasons).

Who calls this progress?

M ighty defense throttled Georgia Southern, 44-0

O utstanding defense obliterated Liberty, 41-17

U nilaterally decimated Maryland, 45-6, on defense and offense

N oxious offense & special teams against Oklahoma, 44-24

T urnovers lose to Oklahoma State, 33-26 in OT despite impressive comeback from 15-point deficit.

A wesome Baylor too much, 62-38.

I ncinerated by TCU, 40-10. Way too many mistakes, penalties, dropped passes.

N ifty rushing, defense take down Texas Tech, 31-26

E xcellent turnovers by defense against Texas, 38-20

E rectile dysfunctioned Kansas, 49-0

R emarkable defense skewered Iowa State, 30-6

S lapstick special teams & inconsistent offense against Kansas State, 23-24

The last game of the year and we don;t stay in lanes on kickoff? We crash to the ball. Sort of like having 11 guys on the line and hoping the opposition doesnt run a draw...

The sickening thing is that all year long the KO coverage team has been excellent...until the final three kicks.

If you enjoy watching "okay" football with an "okay" coach then DH is your man. Poor game decisions continue game after game, season after season.

After going 10-3 with another coach's recruits he hasn't improved...

game management
play calling
team discipline
skill recruiting (QB or receivers that can hold the ball)
clock management
motivation
etc.

The guy was either oversold to the fan base, or has gotten dense the longer he coaches.

Hate to pile on, but remember too that this was possibly a WVU dark horse team to win the Big 12. Next year we lose most of our defensive starters and still have no QB. Lucky to win 6 next year. So, my point is, if the absolute best we can expect from Dana is 7 or maybe 8 wins, then I think I'd go shopping for a new coach. Maybe let next year play out, but can't see us improving any. I have no confidence or enthusiasm for WVU football right now and haven't felt that way since the Cignetti years. Thought we would have a much better record this year, a year without Alabama on the schedule. Hope I'm wrong, but unfortunately, I don't think so. Sucks.

no the main thing, is."why no QB after ours is no good", and "why does the team not play with consent play, at all levels at end of season".

Do we really want to start over again it's a minimum of at least a 3 year setback. Plus we risk losing Smothers who we desperately need. Plus I think that Chugs or one of the other young QB's will take over and be the starter.
Either way I would hate to start over again.

Is it? There are a number of coaching changes in recent years which suggest that isn't necessarily true.

Even so, keeping a coach in the hopes of retaining a certain recruit is probably the worst reason for not making a change I've ever heard. Under that rationale, no school should ever replace an existing coach.

please don't compare Dana's win average to Don Nehlen. Don opened with a MAC team but never these cheap I-AA warm up teams that pad modern coach stats.

Big 12 schedule features 3-4 top 25 teams every year so did Nehlen's teams. only apples to apples comparison looking at it based on a 11-game schedule.

Why do you want to keep going 7-5 or less? Every time there is a coaching change there is growing pains but if you get the right guy you may reap the benefits of competing for a conference championship. As for QB what makes you think chugs is the answer. The guy didn't have one scholarship offer from a power conference. I don't think he had any other Division 1 offers. He was is high demand at the division 1AA level

Isn't that all Dana ever gets? The "big time" QB recruits we have are wide receivers or half backs now. Doesn't make that position easy to recruit when you have to tell them "We have this short inaccurate kid at QB right now. So you have to play receiver or running back if you want on the field!"

Suggest my definition of success for next year is
1) win the bowl this year
2) Beat at least three of this Big 12 teams - OSU, OU, Baylor, TCU and KSU
3) Beat Big 12 teams we beat this year
4) Come out of first three games next year with at least a 2-1 record - should be 3-0 given
that the BYU game in DC should be considered a home game.

Coach Holgorsen will still be the HC next season in Morgantown. Interesting that leading up to the bowl and signing day we still have "WV fans" on this board trying to chase him and recruits off.

The leadership at WVU has spoken and Holgorsen will be here. Recruits need not worry about clowns who could be anyone on a message board.

much agreed. Some of these fans should listen to Bobby Huggins last radio show this week. He calls them out for being stupid. He praises Dana for being a great head coach.

thats a total lie. Nehlen didn't play 3-4 ranked teams every year. Some years yes. Outside of 1993, he routinely lost most of them. 1988 he played one team with more than 6 wins. He averaged 7 wins, same as Dana.

Plus Nehlen only twice reached double digit win seasons in 20 years. 10-11 vs Virginia Tech, 2-11 vs Penn State, 8-13 vs Syracuse and 2-8 vs Miami. 11-8-2 vs Pitt. With a 4-9 bowl record. 2 great years in 20 under Nehlen. 2 great seasons under Rich Rod (1 BCS bowl win) 3 underachieving 9 win seasons under Stewart (1 BCS bowl win) 1 10 win season under Dana (1 BCS bowl win) Please show me where WVU has had more success under any coach other than Dana. Make sure you take into account Dana playing 4 of 5 seasons against the toughest competition in the history of WVU football.

I have never seen the trolls and low information fans on our idiot board this discombobulated. Lyons' memo was a real kick in the face to these posters, and Dana's well deserved bonus and contract extension will be the icing on the cake. What a nice Christmas present!

ncf_a_holgorsen_bl_200.jpg

Did you read the memo? LOL.

To start over is a long and possibly winding road...and I'm not sure that is the proper course at such a heavy buyout...there is a significant risk there. I'm somewhat regrettably in favor of retaining Holgs for another year...but honestly for some of you to pretend he's still some sort of messiah is laughable...he's made mistakes...BIG ones.......

Agree with NCBuck. Pre and early season this was said by many including Dana to be the deepest and best, complete team in the Holg era at WV. It was said this roster was a complete BXII roster after years of building BXII quality depth.

After the PR spin subsided and after another season played out we're 4-5 in the BXII & 15-21 in league play over four wasted seasons. 7-5, 4-8, 7-5, 7-5 is zero improvement & nothing that's earned more on top of the guaranteed $17M being paid out. Other coaches are shown the door after achieving more, but the Luck-Dana deal has sealed the program's fate over recent years.

Tis what it is. Smallwood salvaged this season & propelled them to 7 wins along with a D that got back on track in November. One day the football program will return to its historical winning tradition. WVU is not the 1st or last to rise, fall to all time lows and rise again.

wrong. Expectations were low to the knowledgable fans. The ill informed as usual never grasped and comprehended what was being taught to them. This was the first year we were back to full strength in terms of scholarship numbers filled. The task now is gaining experience and learning. The kids are young and inexperienced. Not short on talent. We are close.

People that talk about "no improvement"--what are you talking about?

You do realize that there are other teams on the opposite side of the field also with coaches, players and a will to win right?

If Coach Holgorsen and the team can get over the bowl hump and win 8 games then that is certainly an improvement--as would the record last year be with a win over top ten Baylor compared to the previous year.

WVU must acquire more outstanding players on the roster and must get better play from players on the roster already--but losing in OT to the #16 team in the country and by a point to a good Kansas State squad that also has narrow defeats to top league schools is not the disaster some are trying to make it out to be. An overthrow here and there, a dropped pass, fumbles--mistakes on the field contributed to the record as did-again-the opponents on the opposite side of the field from an elite conference.

The low expectations are that fans like you will ever be able to comprehend how difficult it is to compete in a power conference. Dana gives WVU the best chance to win a conference championship and that is why Lyons & Gee & most knowledgeable fans are supporting him.

You have more excuses than a Marshall fan... Oh, wait! You ARE a Marshall fan...

still waiting on your answers. Provide proof Dana has received no offers. Who exactly would've beaten us in the AAC this year?
Provide proof that he did... Nah, just keep on making excuses and personal attacks, like a good, little Marshall troll...

So, let me get this straight. We should reward our coach because we didn't fall below the low expectations that his tenure has created? That's really an interesting point of view.

Taking that as a good idea, in the future all coaches should endeavor to do poorly in a new job and lower expectation because meeting low expectations is obviously always going to be easier than exceeding them, or God forbid, doing something that might increase expectations.

I will say if that was his plan, maybe Holgorsen is a mastermind.

wrong. The low expectations were attributed to the many years it took to rebuild a program that was nearly destroyed by the previous coach. We are now full strength but young and inexperienced. It also is attributed to dealing with an enormous upgrade in competition when joining the big 12. Those 2 factors set us back. We are close now.
