Mountaineers Up One Spot to No. 2 in TDS.com Poll

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 12, 2015) – Following a 1-0-1 showing in its first Big 12 Conference road trip of the season, the West Virginia University women’s soccer team moved up one spot to No. 2 in today’s TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 25 Poll.



The ranking is the team’s highest ever in any poll. The Mountaineers (12-1-1, 3-0-1) were ranked No. 3 the last two weeks.



Florida State (12-1-1, 5-0-1 ACC), the reigning NCAA champion, is this week’s new No. 1-ranked team. BYU (11-1-1, 3-0 WCC) ranks No. 3, Virginia (10-1-1, 4-1 ACC) is No. 4 and Penn State (10-2-2, 5-1-1 Big Ten) is No. 5.



Stanford (11-2, 5-0 Pac-12) checks in at No. 6 and is followed by North Carolina (11-2-1, 4-2 ACC), last week’s top-ranked team. Notre Dame (10-3-1, 3-3 ACC) ranks No. 8, Clemson (10-2-1, 4-2 ACC) is No. 9 and South Carolina (11-2-1, 5-1-1 SEC) ranks No. 10.



Texas Tech (8-2-4, 0-1-2) dropped seven spots following its 4-1 loss to the Mountaineers on Sunday and ranks No. 23. The Red Raiders are the only other Big 12 team ranked in this week’s poll.



The fourth NCAA Women’s Soccer RPI also was released today, and WVU is up four spots to No. 9. Today’s ranking is the team’s highest of the season. WVU is the best-positioned Big 12 team, with Texas Tech following at No. 29 and Oklahoma (8-5-2, 1-1-2) at No. 50.



Florida State overtook Penn State this week for the RPI’s No. 1 spot. The Nittany Lions follow at No. 2. Auburn (12-2, 5-2 SEC) ranks No. 3 and is followed by Clemson at No. 4 and Florida (10-3-1, 4-2-1 SEC) at No. 5.



Santa Clara (9-4, 2-1 WCC) ranks No. 6, USF (11-2-2, 4-1-1 AAC) is No. 7 and Stanford is No. 8. Connecticut (12-2, 4-1 AAC) follows the Mountaineers at No. 10.



The Mountaineers close out their home regular-season slate this weekend at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. WVU will play host to Kansas on Friday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m., before facing Iowa State on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 1 p.m.


Friday is “BOGO Coke & Popcorn” night at DDSS, and fans can buy one popcorn or Coke product and receive a second one free. Additionally, the first 500 fans will receive a free megaphone. Sunday is “Senior Day,” and WVU’s six seniors will be honored prior to first kick.
