MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 24, 2018) – The West Virginia University rifle team ranks No. 1 in the 2018-19 College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Preseason Poll.

The Mountaineers were slotted as the top team based on a coach vote. WVU ranked No. 2 in the final CRCA Poll of the 2017-18 season after finishing second at the 2018 NCAA National Championships.

“It’s always nice to be picked No. 1 in the preseason poll,” Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. “The coaches selected us, and that’s a good mark of respect for our program. At the same time, we are well aware that it’s a preseason poll and we have the full season to go. We’re focused on our day-to-day progress, getting better and getting ready for our season opener.”

TCU ranks No. 2, and Kentucky, the reigning NCAA National Champion, ranks No. 3. Murray State and Ohio State rank No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.

Air Force sits at No. 6 and is followed by Nebraska at No. 7 and Alaska-Fairbanks at No. 8. Mississippi and Navy round out the top 10.

The Mountaineers will compete against all but Alaska-Fairbanks this season.

WVU opens its 2018-19 slate at No. 14 Akron on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 10 a.m.
